Christmas status update
Posted by Magnus on 21 December 2003, 22:45 GMT

Merry Christmas to all those of you who do that kind of stuff. Happy Holidays to those who don't. Just Happy In General to those who don't even get a holiday. Now for a quick status update:

  • We've closed voting on the program of the year. Results will be announced in the beginning of next year.
  • As some of you may have noticed, we've updated our RSS feeds. This includes shaping up the one we always had to conform to new standards, as well as adding three completely new feeds. More will be added on request. We've also added a page describing the process of syndication.
  • Finally, we've been doing a lot of behind-the-scenes updates on our news and comment handling system. While most of these changes have been purely backend and behind the scenes, the first parts are now showing up as advantages for you as the end user. So far, the one large thing is that the five minute delay after posting is gone. Instead, new postings are generally up less than 10 seconds after the comment was posted. There will be a longer delay at times when the server is loaded. More changes in this system are planned - stay tuned.
  • Oh, there's a new survey up.

So, does this all actually work, or has Magnus broken the site? :)

Wow- userID 8. Never seen that one before.

Yay! A new survey, and also, will there be any more polls for POTY? I mean, we haven't really done all of the categories yet, or have we?

We have indeed done all of the PotY categories.

On another note, two hours ago we had a 6.5 earthquake about 60 miles from my house. Everything is okay, but there's a bunch of stuff to pick up around the house, and I'm a little shaken. I suppose it's the risk we take in living in the most beautiful place in the world. :-)

Note to self: Stop using punctuation, so readers read whole article.

In that case, I would probably stop after the first line. Hmm...use really small font.

well, usually I only read the titles. Maybe the whole thing should be a title?

As one should do if they break things.

Hey Magnus,
I think the 40-character-word limit is broken. I don't know if it's newly broken or if it's been that way for a long time; I just ran into the bug recently, though.

It looks like it counts newlines as one of the characters, so long words (less than characters 40 each) separated only by newlines are counted as one very long word, and the comment is rejected.

In fact. I tried to split up the long (>40 char) German word Donau...kapitän with newlines only and it didn't work. :-)

The newline thing is REALLY messed up, though. I just had "Bob[newline]Bill" on the last news article as an example, and it didn't even work.

Maybe if the bugs and limits get out of hand, we can just say "See Web Page for my comment". :-P

LOL! But that will even be hard, since the webpage can't be over 128 characters in the status bar, and we'd have to eventually write the site like

h t t p : / / w w w . g o o g l e . c o m /

except that web browsers don't just use a newline marker, they use the win/dos thing.. carriage return then newline

\r\n

Even so, that's only four characters. That doesn't fix the newline problem.

Yeah, you're right. I can see "%0D%0A" in place of newline in a textarea when a form is submitted and method ="GET" (so I could see it in the URL).

I was messing around with netcat a bit to figure this out until I remembered that browsers encode special characters as "%<2-digit hex value>", even for method="POST". Duh.
