Program of the Year Voting Opens
Posted by Michael on 2 December 2003, 10:18 GMT

Sample POTY WinnerWe all know how many people missed the Program of the Month awards that were previously held. Well now there's something even more prestigious: the 2003 Program of the Year award. Throughout the month of December, featured programs from throughout the year will be classified by calculator in weekly surveys. Simply vote for your favorite program! Every Monday a new survey will be posted with a different set of programs. The results will be hidden until all the winners are determined.

The ticalc.org 2003 Programs of the Year will be announced early January once all the results have been tabulated. As before with the POTM winning programs, a specialized screenshot will be provided for the winners. Good luck to all contestants!

Update (Morgan): This is only relevant because there are two Mario pictures on this article, but for anyone that has ever played the original Super Mario Brothers 3 on NES and thought you were good, you need to see this!

Update (Joey): The poll for the 68k calculators has been posted.

Great idea...how are you supposed to nominate the programs?

I think it's some PERL vote thing that we can use... similar to the survey prog.

The issue of calling it PERL rather than the correct capitalization Perl came up this morning on PBML (yahoo perl group). Say, are you by any chance Cristi Ocolisan?

I wasn't asking about the technical details-what I meant was "If there's a program I want to nominate, what do I do?" :-)

Oh, My, Freakkin' God! That was the most awe inspiring thing that I have ever seen! Though, I am not suer if I should be happy for the guy, or feel sorry for him. I really don't know. However, I am inveious of him. I cannot get past the third real level of world eight, much less do it all in less than eleven minutes.

I don't know if you noticed od not, but he didn't even lose his health!! That and he still got the maximum number of lives.

What I find cool is that when he was about to get the third star and get the 5 extra lives...he took the time to slow down a bit in the effort to save time because he would have to go through that whole thing of gettign the 5 lives.

It would have been funny if he slowed down, and accidentally got the star anyway. I would have laughed.

Ooh, good point, I was wondering why he did that. I wonder if I should try to beat that time or not. I don't know, it looks like you can't go any faster. There is one level in there that I always go slow on. Otherwise, just like him, I zip through all the levels. I don't know if I could beat the score, though, for going that fast. That was pretty good. Getting 99 lives usually isn't too hard, but doing it without slowing down or stopping is.

Interesting... it seems that ticalc has /.ed the movie server. I think this may be a new record, and may deserve new terminology - ticalc'ed? Doesn't have the same ring as "slashdotted", but still.

That movie is OLD. It was "GameDev'd" and even "MaxCoderz'd" a long time ago :) Pretty cool though, nethertheless.

I figured someone would come out and say that...still I can bet you 90% of us haven't seen it.

That's one thing I don't get about posting...someone always says "It is old." Does it really matter if it is or not, chances are a good majority haven't heard of it, or t wouldn't be news :o)

I hadn't seen the movie before, either. And what's really funny... in programming class, somebody mentioned it today and wondered where they could download the file. I said there was a link on ticalc, but the server with the movie was down or something because we couldn't get it to download. Gave us some weird error. Probably too many people trying to download it.

Hmm, I think that we might have given them a little too much traffic...lets hope it gets back up pretty soon! It's about 12 megabytes...you sure you can take that in an e-mail?

Life. You don't exactly have one when your IE home page is ticalc.org, and you visit it multiple times each day (like me).

That movie was amazing!

Yeah, our cable modem ISP doesn't allow us to send emails larger than 5MB. Kind of ridiculous for a broadband connection. Oh well, it's still better than dialup. :-)

Do a Google search on "Super Mario 3 11 Minutes". You'll eventually find a working link (I found mine at ebaumsworld somewhere I think).

I tried that and found it split into smaller movie files (to make it easier for downloads, I guess).

Interesting screen name... are you good at connect4? I like that game.
