Super Start v1.0 Flash App
Posted by Michael on 1 June 2003, 05:56 GMT

Greg Dietsche has released his new flash application for the TI-89, Super Start. This app simplifies and improves the steps needed to run a nostub program. It automatically starts normal and exepacked programs, with less memory than TTStart. If you don't use kernels, then this is the new launcher for you.

Well, i can say that the thought has crossed my mind... but the time hasn't come just yet and probably won't until i finish college... But i do find myself spending more time on 'computer' programs versus 'calc' programs.

Anyway, an addendum to Michaels most excellent article ;) This app runs on the TI-92p and V200 and WILL run programs that need a kernel without any problems (I tested with tbo68k) Also, there will be a small update to Super Start as soon as I receive v1.10 back from TI. The update works around a bug that some tigcc programs have in their startup code which will cause a crash because they destroy a2 and it also adds a home screen restore routine to make sure programs can’t goof up the home screen…

Hmm... well this looks cool. Will it launch _any_ program for the 2.05? One of the programs that I've never been able to get running was Street Fighter 2... did you test that one? This looks pretty cool... is it similar to PreOS?

Oh wait... I was a bit confused... this unpacks PPG programs, right?

yes, that is one of the features...

I like convert most normal programs to the ppg format with the ttppggen tool in the TICT tools suite to save more space ;)

I just wanted to add that this bug is fixed for ages in TIGCC. However, there are, and probably always will be, programs which were compiled with an ancient version of TIGCC floating around.

I have 0.92 (I think)... what do you consider ancient?

I know that your parents are uptight about you downloading things, but would they notice if upgraded your version of tigcc? it is not that big of a download.

I don't think they'd notice, so they wouldn't care. ;-)

Given that the current version is 0.94 SP4, version 0.92 certainly qualifies for being ancient. :-) And it still had that bug. The bug was fixed in TIGCCLIB 2.4 SP2, dated 2001-12-27. (I wrote the fix on 2001-12-19.) TIGCC 0.92 shipped with TIGCCLIB 2.4 SP1, and so did TIGCC 0.92 SP1 and SP2.

I reported the problem to Greg : I found it while trying to run TiCon45 with Super Start (and I'm quite sure it is the last version of it :( ). I will e-mail Lionel or Tom for this.

The problem does not appear when the program is run from the AMS, perhaps because it does not store anything in a2 when running programs.

I thought that TI is trying to make it harder to do things like get around the 24KO limit, and yet they're signing your app to do same. ???
(BTW, the book [i.e. the PDF developer doc] says that it's "anti-piracy protection".)

Piracy???????? What could they possible mean by "piracy"? That is most confusing thing that I have heard in a long time.

The same reason they won't release the Freeware key for 68k. In theory, say we have an app whose size is > 24k but less than 64. That's not bad for a flash app. Now, imagine that this app is one you have to pay for it. Next, and I strongly discourage this b/c it's very illegal and immoral, you get hold of a copy signed for someone else's calculator. You extract the actual data from it and turn it into an asm program. The 24k limit stops you from doing this. However, it's more of an annoyance. Also, now imagine that you have the freeware key. You could just theoretically resign the should-be-paid-for app with the freeware key, and that's also piracy.

Note that I haven't tried any of the above, nor do I advocate it. I'm just telling the (il)logic of the above. Also, even though I don't think that the apps should be made for sale, I DO respect TI's right to sell the apps. They put the time into developing it, they have the right to do whatever they want with it (withing legal bounds, of course).

I emailed them about it and they didn't respond. It was about two months ago, so I'm pretty sure that they ignored me.
