Happy Pi Day!
Posted by Joey on 14 March 2003, 01:00 GMT

In honor of this most nerdy of holidays, I am typing this article on my TI-89 with the assistance of my TI-Keyboard. There are a few pi-related things worth mentioning...

  • If you haven't already, go out and rent the movie Pi. Although it is rated R [in the USA -- Henrik], I saw it when I was 15 and received no ill effects. It is absolutely worth plunking down a few bucks for, unless you have some strange aversion to power drills. (Shhh... don't ruin it!)
  • Since last Pi Day, the record for the most digits of pi calculated was broken. A super-computer cluster in Japan calculated a whopping 1.2411 trillion digits of pi. (Of course, my cluster of Beowulf TI-81's will beat that some day.)
  • Although it has been available since 1999, it's worth mentioning Andreas Wahlin's Pi Training for the TI-89. By using it, I have managed to memorize 133 digits of pi.
  • 99% of girls and English teachers do not care at ALL about Pi Day, and will look upon you unfavorably if you mention it. General rule of thumb: Do not mention Pi Day to anyone unless you wouldn't feel silly telling them that "all your base are belong to us."
  • Nerd holidays are excellent excuses for postponing tests and eating pie during class. At the time of this posting, it isn't yet Pi Day in the U.S., so you've still got plenty of time to run out and buy pies for your math class. DOITGORIGHTNOW!
  • At 1:59PM (and 26 seconds, if you feel the need to be precise), it is advisable to spontaineously recite all of your memorized digits of pi aloud. Do this even if you think pi = 3.1416.
  • Instead of sleeping, spend all night wondering why ln(-1)/i = 4*(.5!)^2 = pi.
  • Keep in mind that being a nerd is a great gift, and that it will pay off in the long run. Word.

You have access to the server...

...so can't you change the file to show it was posted at an arbitrary time?

As far as I know, I can't. Magnus has access to the database, so he could theoretically do it, but it's so much more fun to try to time it correctly the first time.

No... like 4th post ;-)

Pi day is fun. Last year, I wasn't too impressive. This year, about 130 sounds good :) (I WANT MORE!)

Me too. Last year, I didn't say the digits I knew at 1:59, but I said them on the day. I think I had about 80-90 then. This year, I had ONE HUNDRED FORTY FOUR! (Yes, I know, you beat me, Jrock, and all you other people who had >144 digits) But at least I got the sound recording of it on the computer!

     14 March 2003, 20:09 GMT

I'e like to hear that :p

Post it somewhere and tell us where to get it.

Okay, but it sounds really odd :)

Seriously? It's 8.32MB... pretty big for a sound recording. I used the CD playback format, so it took up a lot of space. My voice sounds really nasty in it because my nose is stuffy (dang allergies and cold virus)... I hate hearing my voice on tape. lol I was saying them really fast until somewhere around 100 digits when I had to stop to think. :) Probably the best thing to do would be to zip it and try to ftp it somewhere if I wanted to post it on the internet. With a 56k modem, transfers are really sloooooooow :)

make it into an mp3 file... winamp (in the 2.xx series) has plugins that let you write to a variety of formats from almost any input.

^Link Above^ It's free. Make sure to get the latest in the 2.xx series, and then look for an out_mp3 plugin or something similar... If you can't find it there (I haven't checked recently, they might have dropped 2.xx), let me know and I'll get it off of my backup CDs and e-mail it to you. It isn't very big.

Ooh... I just shortened it to about 570KB by changing the playback format to telephone quality. It sounds really bad and you can't really make it out, but it takes up over 10 times less space (actually, that was a guess... so don't think I'm stupid or anything)

I'll re-upload my Javascript Pi game and stick it in the zip file or something. :)

Ohh... and to make matters worse for my voice... my throat was dry and I woke up about two hours earlier. LOL Next Pi Day, I'm going to see if I can get more than 144 :)

Pi day is SOOOOOO much fun! HAHA! Nobody else around here seemed to care that I memorized 12^2 digits of pi... that's a gross, right there, EXACTLY. Oh well :)

I found this one site (link of joyofpi) that had this "1000 club" for people who memorized >=1000 digits of pi. Suddenly, 144 didn't seem like much :) I wonder if some of them really didn't memorize 1000... that's really a lot.

Yeah, I found it on joyofpi.com, then I went to the links section, and in there, I found a link (I think it was under the memorizing section). Anyway, the page had a black background, frames, and on the left frame, it had stuff like "100 Club", "1000 Club"... you'd know it if you saw it, probably.

If you do get >=1000, it would be funny if you ended up with 1024 (32^2) and I got 961 (31^2). That's like last time how you got 13^2 and I had 12^2. lol :)

I really think they cheated, though. Well, maybe not all of them, but it shouldn't be THAT easy to memorize 1000 digits like that :) 144 took me over a year...

Well, I got about 80 in two months, then I only worked on it one day in a month, so the number of digits I knew deterierated slightly, but then around February, I started memorizing again for 3/14, and I still know 144 digits (and I hope to remember them until next pi day... leaves me with less work)
