It shouldn't be too hard to port, except I hear the 86 has a wierd bcall based 24 bit addressing. Nonetheless, it's doable.

24 bit addresses are only used in assembly programs to access external variables and the like. The rest is just regular 16-bit addresses. I don't even think TI-OS functions are called with 24 bits.

Yeah... ROM calls are located on the permanently loaded rom page (I don't recall which number). They're addressed using 16 bits and the code at those addresses is responsible for loading using the 24 bit addressing to load the actual rom page and calling it. (This has the side effect that TI can change all of the real addresses and just leave the jump table the same between rom versions).

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Chessmaster 86 released

The ROM page is $0D. And it is always loaded in when executing an assembly program. However, the asm program can swap it out, and replace it with another rom page, or even a ram page. Most (if not all) of the routines in the call table on page $0D refer to routines that are on rom page $00 that is always loaded in. The 86 has four places to have pages of memory on. The first one is static rom, the second one is swappable rom, the third is swappable ram, the fourth is static ram.

I'm guessing here on the various memory banks:

static ROM: essential functions and functions that assembly programs can call
swappable ROM: applications (graph, program editor, etc.)
static RAM: screen memory, system flags, floating point operands (OP1, OP2, etc.)
swappable RAM: user assembly programs area, user variables

Are these correct?

     23 May 2002, 22:11 GMT

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Chessmaster 86 released
Andreas Finne  Account Info

The swappable rom contains the call table when executing an assembly program. Otherwise I suppose the OS swaps in whatever page it needs to do the things it do :)

The static ram (page 0) looks kinda like this:

RAM PAGE 0 (16k)
0C000h -------------------------
(ABS) | |
system memory

-------------------------
INTER BANK RAM CACHE
-------------------------
RESEVERED RAM FOR
ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE
PROGRAMMING ~ 10k
-------------------------
^
:
hardware stack
0FC00h |-------------------------|
display
0FFFFh -------------------------

Ram pages 2-7 contain the user memory (this is where all your programs are stored) and the symbol table.

At the top of ram page 1 is the FPS (Floating Point Stack) and at the bottom is the OPS (Operator Stack). In between there's free memory. This free memory is often used in asm programs as temporary storage.

It's not REQUIRED. The 86 works perfectly fine. It's just that the 83+'s simpler interface (is it really simpler? Or does it just seem like that) makes it more appealing to people.

I love chess. So many chess games to choose from. Just never a good one for the 83/+/SE. Not that it matters since I have an 89. :)

89 works for me and the 2 other people in my school that have them. We have about 1300. And the 83+'s "simpler interface" is more appealing because some people aren't bright enought to figure anything out. It took some kid literally 2 minutes to find quit on an 83 today. I had to keep myself from laughing.
