ticalc.org Announces Micro-Payments
Posted by Nick B. on 1 April 2002, 07:04 GMT

SOLLENTUNA, Sweden—Saying that ticalc.org was barely breaking even, editor-in-chief Magnus Hagander has announced a micro-payment scheme.

"Though we had success with our IPO three years ago, we've just had trouble making ends meet around here," Magnus was quoted as saying, "so we asked our staff members for some good ideas."

"[Our Security Chief] was the first to respond, and came up with a most brilliant solution. '$0.10 for every click and $0.25 for every file downloaded,' he said. So I'm currently working on the database implementations of it now."

For more details, we spoke personally to the Security Chief. "Well, with even Slashdot going to a subscription model, we realized that soon we may have to do the same. To stave off subscriptions, I felt this was the best way to go, especially since advertising didn't pan out. That being said, I think our users will enjoy being able to help out the site they love so much."

ticalc.org (TICO) went public three years ago, with an initial stock price of $5 per share. The stock quickly rose to over $250 per share, but recently hit its all-time low at $3 per share and is being threatened with delistment.

"With this new model, not only will we be able to finally pay our bandwidth bills, but also we'll be able to please our investors. Based on current numbers, we expect to turn a profit of around a nickel per share," Mr. Hagander said. For information on said bandwidth, we talked to Phil Genera, keeper of the ticalc.org statistics.

"Well, we transferred nearly 157 gigabytes of data last month alone. We still owe from a year ago, though, but we feel now with our increased revenue we can pay off our hosting provider," he said. "Hopefully, if enough people pay, we'll soon be able to scrap the system in favor of something else, like maybe volunteer donations."

OK, here is my idea. If it is a joke, then we laugh. If it isn't a joke, we boycot all V200 sales. That ought to send a message to TI, because about 80% of the V200 sales are probably going to come from people here, and that will hurt them.

I went there once before. It is a pr0n site. I also recommend not going there. I was fully expecting some actual files for the calculators, but I was shocked when I went there. Oh well.

I have AOL, and there is a multiple stock quote checker and I serached for symbol TICO. Here is what I found: (These are the only exchanges that AOL offers quotes for)

U.S. Exchanges: "No quote information is available for TICO."
Montreal: "No quote information is available for TICO."
Toronto: "No quote information is available for TICO."
Venture: "No quote information is available for TICO."
Canadian Funds: "No quote information is available for TICO."
London: "No quote information is available for TICO."
Paris: "No quote information is available for TICO."
Frankfurt: "No quote information is available for TICO."
Munich: "No quote information is available for TICO."
Dusseldorf: "No quote information is available for TICO."
Berlin: "No quote information is available for TICO."
Hamburg: "No quote information is available for TICO."

Too bad...It would have been funny if they actually had used a real stock symbol.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend your "first post" honor, but I waited until midnight localtime for the post to come around. I was also at my computer at midnight gmt, when it was posted last year. For those wondering, I did save a copy of this page. It will be framed and placed on my wall, as well as made viewable through my website! Let's all go to my website and extort what's left of the furby market!

Yeah, the Click part gave it away for me. How can you track the number of clicks on a site by a certain person, and people really aren't going to give their real adress so they can send you bills!

As the article states, Slashdot (see link) does it, but they only charge to take ads off of a page, and you buy 1000 of these pages for $5. They're prepaid (using Paypal), and if you don't pay you just get to see ads on the page.

Note: this is not an April Fool's Day joke--the article linked to was posted much earlier.

Yes, and it doesn't work for the 82. Then, I downloaded and followed the instructions with a DOS rom dump and it locked up the computer. I tried it more than once. Each time, it totally locked up.
