Thomas Williamson releases Dragon Warrior 86 v1.1
Posted by Niklas on 23 March 2002, 16:22 GMT

For all you RPG fans out there, Thomas Williamson has released v1.1 of his clone of the NES game Dragon Warrior. Dragon Warrior 86 features every function found in the original (!), grayscale graphics, and hours of gameplay. It also comes with a complete walkthrough for those of us without patience. :)

Thanx! To the guy on the last page: It IS a software company. Me and my dad make games for the PC (sortof) and John Sheehan (one of my good friends and beta testers) works for our company as a game designer. I made this game and stuck our company name on it. Now I just have to figure out if I should release any of the other cool stuff sitting on my PC....

I think you should release the stuff on your PC (as long as it's not an evil virus LOL)

Well, this question isn't directly to you, it's to anyone: Does anyone know where I can get a <em>FREE</em> C/C++ Compiler that works? Not TIGCC, I have that, I mean for the computer.

If you're in high school, take AP Computer Science. You learn C++ in that class, and will probably also get a copy of the MSVC C++ compiler. If not, you can always go buy a Learn How to Program in C++ book with a CD that has the C++ compiler, install the compiler, and then return the book.

C/C++ compiler

go to the link. It is a compiler for C/C++ called dev-c++. It is the BEST! I use it for all my programming stuff. They also have a bunch of different compilers. You should probably download version 4, because I think version 5 beta isn't entirely finished. It also has nifty options such as:
- Debugger (GDB or Insight)
- Customizable syntax highlighting
- Powerful multi-window editor with many options
- Work in source file or project mode
- Setup creator
- Create console, windows and DLL programs
- Resource file editing (menu creator...)
- Project Manager, compiler, linker and resource results
- Insert automatically C/C++ codes and statements
- Makefile automatic creation
- 2 different icon sets for menus and toolbars in Dev-C++
- Tool manager
- Templates for creating your own project types
and much more (such as an extremely simple popup button creator, a setup creator, etc.)
There are many things other people have made that you can add on to it, too.
And best of all, it's FREE! FREE as in hotdogs somebody dropped on the ground and doesn't want to eat and gives them to you so you can eat it!

I hate MSVC. It sucks.

Click the link for the best C/C++ compiler.

The free command-line borland one (for Windows) is good too.

That is rather ILLEGAL! If you get rid of the book in any way (besides throwing it away), let alone return it, you are also legally required to remove any software that came with it. Doing anything else is a federal offense, and is punishable by up to a $10,000 fine and 10 years in prison.

If you're afraid the feds will catch up with you, you could just keep the book. Learn a little about C++ in the process. :-)

OH NO WATCH OUT THE GOV'T BOOGEYMAN IS GONNA GET ME!!! ahahaha... they haven't caught me yet, and they won't. I have a friend who was on a watch list once (yes, they have watch lists)... he got a nice phone call from the FBI and they served him a cease-and-desist order on all online activity for a year... then they monitored him for another two. Fun stuff.

Most schools are only allowed to give their students a copy of the educational "Working Model" version, which doesn't actually compile at all.

You like Dev-C++ too? It's the greatest. I also forgot to mention that it generates small code. I made a simple "hello world"-like program, and it was nearly twice as small as the other two compilers.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Thomas Williamson releases Dragon Warrior 86 v1.1

The phrase "twice as small" makes no sense. 'Half as large' should be used here. To make something 'twice as small' as something else, you must have a largeness standard such as 50kB. If you choose 50kB as your standard and programs one and two generate 40kB code and program three generates 30kB code, then program three's code is 'twice as small' as the other programs' code.

And the phrase "don't make the same mistake twice" means don't make a mistake a third time.

1: You make the mistake.
2: You make the same mistake.
3: You make the same mistake twice.
