TIGCC v0.93 for Linux Released
Posted by Eric on 12 March 2002, 21:18 GMT

After a 7-month hiatus, Romain Liévin has released TIGCC/Linux v0.93 (both the binaries and sources. The Windows version has been at v0.93 for quite some time, so it's nice to see that he's now sharin' the love.

Are there plans to port this to Mac OS X? If not, would it be possible to create a command-line-only version (so people who don't know anything about porting, like me, could give it a whack)?

I should think the compiler and other tools are still available from the command line, which would not be very difficult to port. An IDE would be much more difficult to port, though, unless it's written for the X Window system.

What else would it be written for?

I don't know if TIGCC for Linux includes an IDE, which is most likely written for the X. If it does, then porting it wouldn't be as difficult as porting the original Windows version to another platform. That's all, I guess.

Give me a shell on an OS X box, and I'll port it for you :)

Really, it shouldn't be hard at all to compile it, if you have the GNU tools installed. I'd do it if I had access to a Mac. The only person I know who has one is in Vegas all week for spring break.

Yes, there is a plan. My debian packager who is also a Mac user reported me that many people are waiting a TIGCC for Mac.

At the time being, it's not currently possible because TIGCC/Linux uses a patcher written in Delphi and Kylix (Linux port of Delphi) works only on Linux/x86 machines.

I am discussing this problem with S. Reichelt: a solution may be found soon.

About the current TIGCC/Linux, it's a command line only package. There is no IDE yet even if I have planned to write on in GTK.
Primary goal: make TIGCC portable !

one quick question:
how is this really news as ticalc said that this was originally made (v. 093) like a month ago? also, what really is linux (I don't want to hear it's a programming code; I mean applications of it)?

ok, that's 2 questions, so sue me.

Linux is an OS similar to Unix and is far superior to Windows and Mac (even OS X; Mac and Unix cancel each other out into nothingness - they are antitheses.)

Heh. Far superior? You are a fanatic, and fanaticism means you don't think about things, you accept them on faith and believe them to the death.

Linux is better in some respects- i.e. it is more stable and better for a server. On the other hand, it takes a while to install and if there isn't a driver you have to code it yourself. Plus, most programs like Photoshop and Dreamweaver and Fireworks and Flash, etc, are on Windows and MacOS machines, and Linux sucks as a gaming platform.

Sure, I was somewhat fanatic and am a diehard fan of Linux. However, Linux is very stable and is a very good platform for program development and servers, just as other flavors of Unix are. I know that most distros of Linux aren't good for gaming or plain suck at it, but Linux is so flexible that it could probably be turned into a good gaming platform. It already won't crash easily like Windows does if a game chokes.

Also as you mentioned, many big software titles aren't available for Linux. I really hope this changes as companies realize the power and use of Linux.

If there isn't a driver for it, you could code it yourself or wait awhile for someone else to write it and give the source out for free. That's another bonus for Linux: most of it is free.

Whatever.

And drivers are easier to write for Linux rather than for Windows ! I have experienced it with SilverLink (TIGRAPHLINK USB) drivers...

You made some excellent points. I guess I'm referring more to the Unix OS in general and less to Linux specifically. The only very significant advantage to Linux is that it's free, as in free speech, not free beer.

I take the time to write a completely factual, informative (imho) post responding to the above post, and it violates the AUP, yet the post I was responding to does not, nor do blatant "first post" posts?

Is it only violating the AUP if it's more than one sentence? I even took the time to write a nice letter to the news staff giving my opinion on the current state of the comments boards.

If we get rewarded for writing lengthy, factual, non troll / flame / junk posts by having them randomly removed with no explanation, then I'm done. Have fun with first post, because with this attitude, that's all you're going to get.

Although I had the first post and let everyone else know it, I agree with you. You had some good points in your mostly (not quite completely, but close) factual and informative post.

If anything, my first post should be removed before your comments, because everyone can still see how foolish and arrogant I was (or seemed to be).

My guess is that they limited the post length not only on new posts, but also on existing ones. So the removal was probably an accident. Everyone makes mistakes.

There are several good games out there for Linux. Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament, Soldier of Forutune, Descent 3. You can emulate many more, like Half Life. The Counter Strike thing for HL works great under WINE.

It's spelt "L-I-N-U-X", but it's pronounced "Free Beer".

Well, Windows has NEVER crashed on me, if you mean "crash" as in wiping out all the contents on my hard drive. If you mean "crash" as in the computer glitching up with the blue screen (of death), then yes, but it happens rarely, and if you mean "crash" as in "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, please contact the program vendor" (or something related), then yes, that does happen, but not as frequently as some people think. AND, if you mean "CrASH" as in CrASH 1.6, then no, that's only for TI-82s.

The thing with recursion is that if you don't have a way out of it, you'll have problems. For example, with the C program above, it would dump core on a Unix or Linux system, but it (like your "call recursion" snippet) would probably crash any lesser system, such as DOS or TI-OS due to a stack over(under?)flow.
