Voyage 200 PLT Announced
Posted by Eric on 7 January 2002, 18:47 GMT

Voyage 200TI has announced Voyage 200, a new calculating device they're calling a "Personal Learning Tool" (PLT). The device is similar to the TI-92+ and contains all its features, including a QWERTY keyboard. It also includes a funky new design and a 2.7MB ROM. It'll go for around $200 (includes a Graph Link) and will be out in time for back-to-school season. Check the page for more information or view the specifications.

Update: (Nathan): Okay, okay, so it's been announced and not yet released. Boy, some of you people are picky! :)

The article you link to does not show anything about a TI-86+ being planned by TI, just a small section of user comments on what a TI-86+ would be like *if* TI ever announced plans for one.

TI has abandoned improving the 86 in favor of the 83+ and it's line of calculators. Hopefully this is not permanent, but it seems to be the trend for awhile to come. They had to pick one or the other, and since many textbooks already had very direct examples, methods, and screenshots for 83(+), that's what they chose.

When I first looked at this new calc I was excited. Then after reading the specs, I just said to myself that this could of been so much more. Yeah over 2 megs of memory is sweet. I was hoping more of a PDA format. Maybe even a modem for future web surfing. Until TI has a calc that is the ultimate, I'll just stick with my 89.

I think I've said this before... but I think that the proliferation of hand-held internet devices is just another sign that people are ADDICTED to the net.

It seems TI is gonna stop making 83 Pluses different colors and start up again with the 92+...

Any way, I have a regular 83 Plus and I want this instead of a regular 92+ It looks really cool and has a funny-looking case!

donotfrown:)

I think the 83+ SE is good because I have downloaded everything I can find and still have 1/3 of the memory left, plus I can still give games to all of my non-techy friends

Voyage 200 isn't for the hardcore people
Chris Hosea  Account Info

It's for the teachers. They flipped when the saw the 92 and didn't understand. TI is trying to make it easier for THEM. This is why they're not advertising it off as a calc.

No, it's not a calc, it's a personal learning tool!
^_^
But by all means, if you guys want it, get it.

I wonder if they will make another "NEW" chip. TI-92 --> Ti-92 II --> Ti-92 plus
Perhaps Ti-92 Plus II??
I also wonder when the new AMS will be downloadable?
And what about the "*Optional assembly language programming." Is this just the Beta-4 of Flash-studio? Still free? Or not? Or perhaps an program on the calc itself with an compiler and linker?

I don't think they will create a new Plus module for 3 reasons.
1. The Plus module and the TI-92 are both discontinued for some time. TI abandoned hardware upgradability in favor of software upgradability.
2. It would make owners of the newer TI-92+ HW2 really angry.
3. It would mean they have to mask out the existing internal ROM on old TI-92s to make room for the 4 MB of FlashROM, and I am not sure that this would be possible.

"TI abandoned hardware upgradability in favor of software upgradability."

I know. They can still improve their AMS. It makes a lot of mistakes. Although i only know some math-miscalculations, i rarely play games. But the software-upgradability isn't every-thing. Sure, we have Cabri Geometry, Finance and The Geometers Sketchpad, but not enough space to put it on a 92+. And just installing the program you want to use that day, isn't everything.

What? No color LCD STILL!?!?

Casio has color graphing calculators, and this is the only thing that they cannot beat Casio with! If they simply stuck a color screen on the system It would be better

I doubt that many people have requested color screens. The ones on the Casio are absolutely appalling. Perhaps they can consider the 16-bit (not sure bout this little piece of info) screen like the one on gameboy advance. Anyway, i think this calculator is a good one, but i wouldn't buy it---already got my good ole 89. I WOULD buy it if i did not have a CAS calc, but i do, so cheese pizzas.

16 bit? Do you realize that that is 65536 colors? That also means that each pixel would require two bytes. I would be happy with 8 bit (256) just for a calc.

Heck! Any color would be nice like 16 colors. Still I would prefer 256
