TI APP Development Contest Results
Posted by Eric on 29 September 2001, 22:10 GMT

Well, it's sure been quiet around here lately, but TI has finally announced the winners to their APP Development Contest, which ended on August 15. The winners receive a paid 3-month opportunity to develop application software for TI, a trip to a calculator conference, and lots of other goodies. Congratulations to the winners.

Update (Eric): TI has notified me that there was an error on the page that has since been fixed. Brandon Sterner's Symbolic Differentiation App was tied for first place, rather than coming in second.

check out the 'TIGCC for Linux' discussion... there are a LOT of arguments for both sides (although the people who think linux is better lied a LOT... i don't want to start this again, that string of comments takes a LONG time to download)... but here is my argument for Windows.. EVERYONE IS DOING IT (and it has more games, more programs, and compatability (with software) is never a problem)

bah. you again. have you ever used linux?

Anyway, to answer the question about getting linux...

Go for it. Linux is cool. I can reccomend RedHat 7.1 or Mandrake 8. I've tried both (I like RH better).

Here's why I am using Linux:

1. It's free (I downloaded RedHat 7.1 without paying a penny for it. Windoze 98 is $80 bucks or so.

2. It's open source. (Need I say more?)

3. It's more stable. Windoze tends to crash alot. Anyone who disagrees with me should leave their Windoze computer running for a couple of days without shutting it down or rebooting. Use it like you'd use it normally. Unless you're running NT or 2000, after about 2 days, you'll have to reboot.

4. You can run linux on anything better than a 386
5. It's faster than Windoze
6. It's a better programming enviroment than windoze

I admit that getting Linux to work can be difficult. I had trouble with my GF2 32mb card, and it took a while for me to compile my Netgear FA311 device drivers into the kernel. But that's why linux is for hackers and programmers...

Sure, windoze is great for games. Windoze is great for plenty of people. I even use it - my system dual boots RH and W98. I just prefer linux...

I'm doing a triple boot - Windows ME & XP and RH 7.1 I prefer Linux for networking purposes (the whole x-terminal connection thing is nice, since you can run another computer through your computer's I/O devices), but Windows XP for any other purposes like gaming, audio/video/photo editing, and watching movies. They're all good, but I'd have to say that I like Windows XP better. Sure, it has more of Microsoft's monopolistic tendencies (it has built-in CD-R/RW writing capabilities, for example), but it does make security and workgroup networking much easier. It's all good.

You'll need a burner...

Linux is pretty intimidating at first... but after a while, you'll want to use it more than Windows.

Is XP any good? I've heard that 2000/NT/XP use a different type of partition than 9x/ME... can you still access the XP partition like you would a FAT32 under Linux?

XP is awesome. It's got all sorts of enhancements over the old OS, and it's totally customizable. You can tweak pretty much everything. The only problem I have right now is software compatibility - mainly for drivers and stuff, but also for a couple programs (Carmageddon 2, for example).

The major improvement made in XP is crash handling. I've had XP cause a fatal error maybe once in the two months I've had it - and in that case I still think it was the fault of a third-party program.

About the partitioning thing: Yes, XP uses a different partition format (NTFS, rather than FAT32). If you add a new partition to a Windows 9x/ME drive (using something like Partition Magic, which is what I use), the XP partition will be invisible to the old OS (because of file system conflicts). However, XP can read any of the old OS's partitions.

I'm not sure about Linux reading an NTFS partition. I don't know much about Linux, since I'm new to using it. As far as I can tell, it can read and write a FAT32 partition (since it can read my ME partition), but I can't seem to find the mount point for my XP partition. Plus I haven't looked very hard for it. Once I find out I'll be sure to let you know.

In case anyone is wondering: I've got a 60GB hard drive, with 42GB devoted to Windows ME (in two separate partitions), 6GB to XP, and the rest to Linux. Windows XP itself takes up a surprisingly small amount of hard drive space - probably slightly less than ME.

XP is fun. I suggest you all get it. It'll feel like a mix between NT and ME, which is basically what it is. Plus it has all of NT's security, networking, and fault protection bonuses. It's an all-around good OS.

Of course, I'm talking about XP Professional here, not XP Personal or whatever the other one(s) is (are).

I finally got my Ticalc CD too (I am from Europe - Belgium)! Thanks!

The CD includes the archives with the approved programs using the same html interface as the site. A few pics of the TI-Calc staff too are included too. Simple and effective. My BASIC programs didn't make it in but both my ASM programs did.

Keep on the good work and keep programming you guys. We don't see much news these days.

Also, the CD content on your personal CD is updated as often as it is on the site.

Since I never got an answer to this before, I'll post it again...

Who should I send an e-mail to if I want something to be posted as a news item?

The news is this:

Does anyone remember when there was an automatically-generated news eBook available daily at http:// members.nbci.com/bubbastinky/ebooks ? Well, I am currently working on (read: perfecting) a perl script that will do the same thing.

The ABC News, Slashdot, and TICalc.org frontpages are available once again in eBook form at http:// lordnightrose.resnet.mtu.edu/cgi-bin/ ebook.pl . This page is updated whenever I visit it, which will be approximately once a day if not more often than that.

If I'm updating the page at the time, then it might take a while to download. Otherwise, it shouldn't take too long.

Enjoy!

P.S. If you have any suggestions (e.g. formatting, other pages to add, etc.), feel free to let me know at lord_nightrose@yahoo.com .

You can always post this at calc.org or tinews.net. If you want the news article to be shown at ticalc.org then you might try news@ticalc.org or eric@ticalc.org, since he's the news editor.

You probably won't get much luck here--they don't update the news very often.

Seriously, it has been so long since a new news article, since september 30th for a program, and God knows how long for a new survey, i am telling you, this site is falling to shit. Watch, they won't even remove this comment for bad language, they are too lazy (or non-existant?)

I would have to lean toward non-existant rather than lazy.

Hopefully 'nonexistent' isn't the case... seeing how crazy the world has been lately. 'Nonexistent' might translate to 'dead'.
