Network Outage
Posted by Magnus on 7 July 2001, 14:56 GMT

As many of you probably noticed, ticalc.org was hit with a network outage friday evening. Due to the bad timing of this (being a late friday evening, and also the time when the only person who could really get to things to check what was wrong (me) was on a flight home from TechEd in Barcelona), the network outage lasted for 15-16 hours. It has now been fixed.

The problem was in the access router from Telia through which all the internet traffic goes.

My Telia ADSL was down about at the same time. They often have problems with that. Too bad they still have monopoly on this field...

That would be ADSL. We don't have ADSL, and we usually have a *lot* better service level than most ADSL customers. Could be because the "Permanent Internet" service certainly has a lot of competition....
I'm not saying that Telia rules in that field, definitly not. We have connections with other companies at other places that are better.. But this connection is really cheap compared to the competition, due to a deal that was written a long time ago...

Grrr. I have 56K dial-up with 50% availability. See, the ISP saw that people were only hitting the server 5% of the time (web pages take time to read, you see) so now you can only hit the server during 'windows' 50% of the time. Napster holds it open, though :)

Only 40-60K??? I'd trade with you in an instant. I only get 2-3K on a modem.

That's not a bad download speed for DSL. You have to remember to convert from kbs (Kilobits per second, what ISPs advertise) to KB/s (Kilobytes per second, what most web browsers show for download speeds). To do this divide by 8 bits/byte. So, if you have a 768 kbs down DSL, the highest possible speed is 96 KB/s, but you will probably never reach this.

i have reached it... if you count multiple downloads at a time... I have downloaded like 3 songs each at 30K/sec or better

yeah... use something like Download Accelerator... it speeds downloads up by downloading on up to seven separate connections, then combining the pieces. Each download can often be as fast as, if not a little slower than, your normal connection speed (thus boosting your speed to about 7x normal).

I have a friend who uses FlashGet, it is also good in that it allows to limit how fast you download something.

i've been up to 200 KB/s on a cable modem at times, but that depends on the server i'm downloading from...This is without download accelerator
the DSL at my school is able to notch 4 megs/second when the network is relatively free of traffic!

I recently had Verizon dial-up but they were really unreliable (I didn't even know that they had merged with my former service. I was wondering why it was suddenly so unreliable and I was redirected to Verizon’s site). I got tired of them and switched to another service that costs about 60% as much.

Thank goodness. I though my connection died or my browser was messed up. Wasn't expecting it to download this morning.

TI-News' DNS was down too. Probably related to similar causes.

All the sites hosted by ticalc.org were obviously down too. However, calc.org was not down.

Yeah, a bunch of sites were affected by the outage but calc.org was still up (although I don't visit it too often, it's gotten too confusing to use). It's kind of strange that our dns was down since it's hosted in the US and not too many US sites were down. Go figure.

This is definitly not connected to ticalc.org. Our hosted sites are, of course, since they are running off the same box. Our DNS is hosted on two separate ISP connections (to our own servers here at SolNet) here in Sweden, and one in the US, so it was definitly not a DNS problem for us.
Again, this outage was specific to SolNet and ticalc.org. Only sites hosted by ticalc.org (thus on our netwrok) were affected. If other sites were affected, it was totally unrelated.

Weird, kinda strange both sites would go out at about the same time. We never did figure out what went wrong with our DNS so we presumed it was down due to a similar problem as ticalc.org (not because ticalc.org was down or it's ISP).

Nice to see ticalc.org back up and running again! :-) That was odd when I kept trying to go to ticalc all day Friday and it didn't come up... but since in the News archives they've had outages before and came back up I wasn't too worried...

Sorry, I didn't quite word my sentence correctly. What I meant was that I tried to visit ticalc.org a few times at various points of the day. :-)
