TI-83+ OS v1.13 Released
Posted by Eric on 12 April 2001, 04:14 GMT

A whole slew of people have emailed me about a new TI-83+ OS version, so all you 83+ users might want to go check it out. I'm not too sure what's new in this version (the webpage says it "contains advances over OS version 1.12...functionality as well as some fixes"), but hey, it's a bigger version number, so that means it's gotta be better, eh? Or something like that. Anyway, here's the link to the download page. Enjoy!

The new ROM version has updates to support the additional Flash and other hardware changes on the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition. New entry points are included for dealing with the SE. Also updated is the APPS menu. In previous ROM versions it took quite a long time to load if you had more than just a couple applications loaded. 1.13's APPS menu is just as fast as all the other TIOS menus.

Yes, but does it break anything?

I'm fairly sure that everything will continue to work fine under 1.13 on the TI-83 Plus hardware. On the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition hardware, this may be a different story altogether. I suspect most everything will work fine, but there may be some timing issues with buffer copy routines in shells. We'll have to wait and see.

Well, I have had a compatibility problem. With the 1.1 release of Mirage OS, I tried running the ti82 program Boulder Dash (emulated through Mirage). Normally this works fine. Well, this time it crashed my calculator and took me about 10 minutes to get it all working again.

It's the interrupt that 82 programs use so profusely that stopped the program.

So did they make new version of this that has your name in it?

There's one thing you failed to mention: They didn't update their URL on Mem: About section. It still reads "http://www.ti.com/calc/", whereas, it should be "http://education.ti.com/". =)

Well, www.ti.com/calc makes more sense as a URL - the calculator division of TI's site. Education.ti.com just sounds like some utopian ideal of TI's to revamp the American system of learning. :-) I suppose it's better that they didn't change it.

Yeah, they both go to the same place, but they still use education.ti.com more often.

I noticed that too, it helps not having to wait almost a full second to access the menu after you press the button. (I have quite a few apps)

Newer=Better?
Don Quixote Account Info

Why would newer mean better. AMS 2.04 nd 2.05 for the 89 are vastly inferior to 2.03, at least in compatibility, and I have never run in to any math incapability in 2.03, or for that matter, in 1.00

It's my opinion that newer is worse, because newer is more secure

In my opinion, you're wrong. Newer offers new capabilities, features and speed. If you look at Dan's post above, you'll see what I mean.

What do you mean?
AMS v2.05 increases the asm size limitation, how is it worse than v2.03?

Well, you could just get HW2Patch for the hardware limit, or get a nostub loader for the software limit. But if TI fixes all this in a new ROM version, and makes it more secure, you can't do this stuff anymore. That's why he's saying that newer is more secure and worse.

It does have some nice features though.

Try having 2 flash applications with 2.03. Now try it with 2.05. See any differences?

Ok, a little off subject, but here goes. I am begining work on a UNIX (or Linux) style "OS Shell" for the TI-89. Why, you ask? Well, needless to say, I was bored in math class and started writing it in BASIC. I think the majority will be in BASIC, so I can write it on the go, but I will have external assembly routines for other stuff (folders and files in the folders, etc.). If you are interested in helping out in this project, check out my email link above. And I am planning on distributing it through the GNU GPL, just to let everyone know. Why says open source is a bad thing? I like Linux!

Come one, come all, as this may be too big for just one developer.

With a command interface then?
Isn't writing commands on the calc a bit too timeconsuming for it to be really usable?
(Not saying you shouldn't do it, always fun to program, whatever it is)

I think wading through menus is cumbersome. It is much faster to type and use an auto completion feature. (I have written a tsr which does this for the home entry line.)

Anyways, didn't somebody already start a linux shell in c.

I haven't heard of anyone else doing a Linux shell on the TI-89. But even if there was, what's wrong with another? Several companies make distributions of Linux (Redhat and Mandrake to name a few). What one doesn't have, another might.

Of couse it will have a CLI (Command Line Interface). Actually, most of the time I prefer using the Konsole in Linux more than clicking around. Don't worry, there will still be GUI Desktop Environments for those people who don't like to type everything, but for those that do, that option will be available.

On an added note, most (if not all) (standard, such as ls and su) commands in Linux are 8 characters or less. I haven't found one that isn't yet. Anyone that has, feel free to correct me. I find it fairly easy to type 8 letters. I have a pretty good typing speed on the TI-89. The Konsole (no, that's not misspelled) gives you more options than menus and icons (in my opinion).

Yeah, I like Konsole... I mapped it to my context menu key on my Microsoft Windows (tm) keyboard. :-P

Anyway, I think MirageOS has a good CLI... all the commands are only one letter long. If you run out, we could go to two letters and have dozens more combinations to use.

Dude, you can't make your shell under the GPL. The GPL requires that the license be distributed wherever the program goes. That means you'll have to have a text file (a rather large one) on your calc at all times and if you want to give it to a friend, you have to send it to them too.

Yea, simpler to have it true open source, and rely on peoples common sense... maybe some notes in the readme you distribute with the file off calc.
Works quite nice for small communities like the calc, where there is no money involved.
No need for the overkill GPL.

You have a point there. I "leaked" this information shortly before going to bed. I was really tired and seem to have forgotten that fact. So I will distribute it under true open source. A small file will be resident on the computer that holds the "licence" information.

No no no no no. All you need to do is say that the app is GPL and where a copy can be found. You're safe with

"This program is protected by the GNU General Public License version 2 or, at your option, any later version. You can obtain a copy of this license from ..."

6b encode that and it'll only be 200ish bytes.
