Detached Solutions Programming Contest Ends
Posted by Eric on 10 April 2001, 05:03 GMT

To bring some closure to the contest we reported on earlier, and also to relieve ourselves of an otherwise slow news period, the Detached Solutions-Texas Instruments Application programming contest has been completed. Find more information about the contest, including a list of the winners and their programs, here. Congratulations to all the winners!

You must restart your calc before you do anything else. Take out one battery, then hold down the negative and ")" buttons, and then while continuing to hold them down, put the battery back in. Continue holding them down until the calc is fully restarted. This will work, NO MATTER WHAT!

I am sorry to say it did not work :(

If posting in all capitals is irritating, I sincerely apologize - I meant it only to display and convey my feeling of urgency - this is a 150 dollar piece of equipment - and a RARE "hardware version one" ti-89.
I found it by chance, and to lose it would be a horrible thing for me. Please if there are any other ideas...

My TI-83 Plus went through something similar. I tried everything-- even banging it on the wall and throwing it on the floor, but it did not help ;). The only way to fix it is to continue what you haven't yet finished.

A couple things.
1 - I bought my second TI-89 a month ago (the store down the street was going out of business and selling the for $80) It makes my second HW1 that I have, so I don't really think that they're all that rare, just a little easier on the grayscale and a little harder on the memory.
2 - Remove batteries. Insert new batteries. Press "I" to recieve again (it has to be timed pretty well, I guess, 'cause sometimes it won't even connect)
Start the download, and pray...

THANK YOU FOR ALL THE HELP!
IT TURNED OUT THAT I HAD TO USE A GRAY GRAPHLINK AND THE ACTUAL GRAPHLINK SOFTWARE (NOT 3RD PARTY TILP).
THE MATH DEPARTMENT AT MY SCHOOL WAS CLUELESS, AND USING ONE OF THEIR PRECIOUS GRAPH LINKS (THEY HAVE ABOUT 500 IN STORAGE) IS ABOUT AS HARD AS ACCESSING AMERICA'S NUCLEAR MISSLE SILOS. BUT THANK GOD THE AP BIO TEACHER IS A "T3" (T CUBE) TEACHER AND FLASHED THE SOFTWARE ONTO MY CALC USING GRAPHLINK SOFTWARE WHICH WOULDN'T WORK ON MY COMPUTER AT HOME. FUNNY TO ME ALL THE OTHER WAYS DID NOT... In terms of the rarity of HW1 - It is chance to find a display model in good condition or to find a new one which mysteriously remained on the back shelves of some store which didn't sell enough to move it out. So good luck for anyone trying to find one.

how many times a week must each person in this community download VTI a week? Its a nice program but it seems to me that i only need it on my computer 1 time, yet the program seems to be #1 dl every week

Well, there were probably many updated and bug fixes to the program when it was first being developed, so people download the same program several times. Also, people may have several computers (at work and at home), and they need a copy.

So you can also see why Patrick Davidson is the number one most downloaded author of all time with all those versions of Phoenix....

Maybe they don't know that they can run the program from their computer and they download it every time they need the emulator.

<insert X-Files theme here>
Or.... maybe there is a conspiracy and everyone is secretly controlled by aliens that want VTI to be the top download week after week to see how long it takes us to flip out.
</X-Files theme>

Or... maybe the nuclear waste from WWII has infected us all and we have grown brain tumors that block our short-term memory centers and we forget we already downloaded VTI.

You be the judge.........

Did any one else notice that the rules explictly state:

-Only one entry per author will be accepted. You are allowed to work on submissions as a group, but please do so with the understanding that the prizes can only be mailed to one person and multiple prizes will not be given out to group produced applications.

Why is it then that Andreas Finne has TWO programs that made runner up (Dots and Tower of Hanoi) That seems a little shady to me. They could have given a runner up to someone who followed the rules...

First of all, *everyone* who entered a working program got at least runner up. There were no programs that got "pushed off the list" because Andreas (and Michael Vincent, and Joel Seligstein) entered twice.

As for why we allowed people to enter twice (keep in mind if they entered twice, we only allowed one prog per category), we had a couple of sticky situations. The first is that the rules originally stated that you could enter one program per category. Somewhere along the line someone (I've no clue who) changed the rules page to read as it currently does. I didn't notice this for quite a while (when someone pointed it out to me), and felt it was unfair to change the rules on people who had already been planning two entries. The other problem was that there was no way to stop people from "cheating" and submitting their programs under other peoples names, so they could enter more than one. We hoped that by allowing one in each category, it would discourage anyone from trying to circumvent the rules.

Please keep in mind that only one person, of three, who entered two programs won "winner" (1st/2nd/3rd) prize, and it was only for one of their programs. The rest of the double entries were all runners up and had no effect on the contest. We're sorry that things got a little confusing. If we ever have another contest we'll try to make things more clear.
