Happy Pi Day!
Posted by Eric on 14 March 2001, 06:08 GMT

Today's always a festive day around these parts...after all, it's Pi Day (3/14), perhaps our favorite holiday around here (rivaled only, of course, by e Day and Mole Day). So anyway, before I head off for a heavy dose of pi celebrations, I'll point you all to last year's article, which contains lots of wholesome information about everyone's favorite number, courtesy of our own Andrew Selle.

So...yeah, Happy Pi Day!

Update (Eric): And while we're on the subject, let's take a moment to salute those die-hard Pi celebrators—just take a look at this loyal reader and Pi Day devotee. Goes to show you that all your pi are indeed belong to us.

Now how do you get e day? 2.72... I guess you can get e mod .28 day for non leap years... then you could celebrate on Feb 16.. I dunno.

actually, e day is the 72nd day of february, or, either april 12th or 13th depending on whether or not it is a leap year.

anyone heard of yet another irrational constant called phi? it equals (1+sqrt(5))/2, or about 1.6180339887499.... therefore, phi day would be march 2nd or 3rd, again depending on whether or not it is a leap year.

You could use the format day/month/year, which is more logical anyway. Then e day would be February 27.

And psi=(1-sqrt(5))/2

On a side note, to calculate the nth fibanacci number use this:
(phi^n-psi^n)/sqrt(5)

Yea... golden ratio... Cool thing is, you take the golden ratio, subtract one, and it is the inverse of the golden ratio.. take the golden ratio, add one, and you have the golden ratio squared!

My Favorite Holiday
onefastfiveoh

Only 37 days till my favorite holiday. ;p

I watched this show once were a guy won $10,000 U.S. dollars for memorizing the first 100 digits of pi. He had a week to do it in. Pretty easy I thought. But I guess that's just my view since I already have the first twenty digits memorized.

I'm a lozer I know.

37 days, can't wait!

Today I made a Pi poster in German class becasue I was bored and I paraded throughout the halls holding my Pi poster up in the air. Hooray for Pi! People called me obsessed. They are wrong.
I'll draw an ASCII representation of it:

-----------------------------
TODAY IS
Pi DAY!!!!
------
| | 3.14 | 1592653589!!! |
------
------------------------------

As you see, I have only memorized 12 digits :-)
