Sami Khawan Releases Beta PIXpand
Posted by Eric on 31 October 2000, 17:25 GMT

Sami Khawan, otherwise known as the Euro with the cool email address, has released a beta version of the PIXpand, a memory expander for the TI-82, TI-83(+), TI-85, TI-86, TI-89, and TI-92(+). The interesting part of the PIXpand is that it uses Playstation Memory cards as media. Get more information about this and his other nifty projects here.

Cool project.

This project looks cool. Please fix the topic board Eric, so people can read each others posts. Happy Pagan Druid Holiday! (um er, happy halloween) ;)

To say that halloween is a Pagan Druidic holiday is a bit misleading. While Halloween, known as Samhain on the Wheel of the Year, is a Pagan holiday, it isn't exclusive to the Druid path. Plus, as with nearly every other holiday, non-Pagans have made this holiday into one of their own. Christmas is Yule, Halloween is Samhain, etc.

a couple questions about this marvelous device...
-do you offer a pre-assembled model?
-if not, do you offer a kit that includes ALL the necessary components?
-if not, do you know of websites that offer everything needed?
-how do you get your programs off of the memory card, just hit receive on your calc and everything gets sent from the card to your calc?
-finally, how much memory does a standard PS mem card have?

Hi,

This project is still in its beta phase, so there will be no kits and no pre-assembled devices. When it has been tested enough, the dsitributors named on my page will be able to provide the parts and the devices.

Yes, to send something from the card to the calc you put the calc in receive mode, then you chose the location on the memory card (by pressing the push-button for a short time) and then you press the button for 2 seconds in order to transfer the variables on that location.

In the future there will be a small ASM program that will be able to display the content of the memory card. For now you need to know which variables are stored on which location.

The smallest PS mem card has 1MBit = 132kb, and the largest can get (as far as I know) up to 24MBit=3Mb.

Sami, Your the man. Could I use this possibly with the radio links from the last post and create a remote data server type thing? Do you think that would work?

That is an awesome idea, it would make it really easy to cheat on math tests physics tests, cause you could have the PS card in your locker and receive all your programs after the teacher checks your calc before the test. I hope people don't do this because then teachers might catch on and might ban TI calcs on tests.

Congrats on figuring out this device, sami. i really admire your work and hope to get this expander soon. how about e-mail on the calcs? just an idea, keep up the good work!!

Geeze, Why must everyone put every Idea here with Cheating? The TIs are great calculators and we should try to not slur their fine reputation with them being portrayed as High Tech Cheating Machines.

Also, Sami, Again, You are the man. Just wanted to make that clear again :)

Hi,

Yes, this should work by adding a feature to make the calc bypass the push-button (i.e. make it able to select the address in the memory and make the device send the variables at that address). This will require a small asm program (can be done in basic too).

In the current beta version there is small support for reading the content of the card (at any address); this will be improved in the final version.

That might work, and it sounds amazingly cool. If I remember right, those radio links work just like a link cable. Someone should try that out once these things become availiable.. Of course, nobody is going to write a driver for the 83(+) :(

Does this device except backups such as CrASH and Usgard? Also is there a future design that possibly can hold 8 places instead of 4? (One for each calc 82/83/83+/85/85/89/92/92+)

obviously I meant 82/83/83+/85/86/89/92/92+

Hi,
Backups are supported on the TI82/83/85, but not on the TI89 and the TI92(+).
Backups are only useful on the TI82 and the TI85 since on all the other calcs asm program can be run without shells (and shells can be instaleld without backups); except on the TI92.
In the future, it is possible to add the support for TI92 backups.
