TCPA: Telnet 83 Plus, Tower of Hanoi, Atari Boxing, Melt Man
Posted by Nick on 14 August 2000, 04:39 GMT

The TCPA is at it again, with their dastardly plots to take over the world through massive amounts of thermonuclear detonation and... um, never mind. :) Here is a gaggle of programs that folks from the TCPA have released in the past few days. Apologies for the short descriptions; there's been a lot of stuff going on with the screenshot staff lately (like, you know, GETTING IT WORKING). Things will resume their normal punctuality and lack of brevity in due time.

  • Telnet 83 Plus v.15 was ported by Dan Englender. Using this with your external modem will give your 83 Plus a VT100 terminal to use with Telnet and such.
  • The Tower of Hanoi exists in 83 Plus versions, for both MirageOS and Ion, as well as an 83 version for Ion. This is just like the Tower of Hanoi game you've always played, only, um... more 31337. Yeah.
  • Atari Boxing has been released by the ubiquituous James Vernon. 83 and 83 Plus versions are available. This original (to calculators, at least) game is a port of an old Atari 2600 boxing game, where you look at the boxers from overhead. Werd!
  • A combination action/puzzle game by Matt Landry, Melt Man v1.0 has just been released for the 83 and the 83 Plus, for Ion. The protagonist has as many bullets as aliens, which makes ammo conservation and other innovative tactics a must. Nice!

Congrats to the TCPA for all their recent accomplishments to add to the roster of Really Cool Things(TM) they've done in past years.

I find blu-tack works just as well, and doesn't obscure the styling of said calculator and modem as much as a great big roll of silver tape.

So there ;)

Duct tape is more stylish. I wrapped my entire body in duct tape for last year's Science Olympiad regional tournament.

Gray, not silver. Gray is the best.

Hooking a modem to a calc

You need a Grey Graphlink cable or a PIClink. If you don't have one of these you can't do it. You also need a null modem adapter. Hook all of these together ,find a phone line, and your online. BTW: Hot glue works better than duct tape.

Hot Glue is betta. Duct Tape leaves a stickey residue around the sides so your calc will have a lot of dust and cr*p around the tape. Hot glue is so much stronger and neater. Maby TI should look into the first calc with universal port. It would be nice to add USB keeping all the advantages on computers for the calc. 2 Would be sufficient. With new computer drivers, you could download and upload things to your calc much faster. Plus it would leave the Calc open to pluggin in more memory, Modem, Disk Drive, A monitor. They could always use Smart Media Cards for a built in drive that could hold up to 64megs (for now, soon up to 128). With the Smart Media Cards, you can take them out and hide it in the palm of your hand when a teacher comes around to reset your calc. And you'll never have to lose your programs due to some failure in the calculator. Just remember to give it at least 32m ram to give it that edge it needs to do those operations. Too bad that this calc would run to about $200 and thats only if TI decides not to make much of a profit off of it.

Does anyone know if the TI-Graphlink Black cable is serial link compatible? If so then it too would be DOS accessible screwing TI even more, well not really.
