AMS v2.04 for TI-89 and TI-92+ Released
Posted by Eric on 7 June 2000, 23:51 GMT

Reno notified us that TI has recently released the new version of the TI-89/92+ internal software. The new version includes an increased RAM limit for ASM programs (8K to 24K), language improvements, and other enhancements. Download AMS v2.04 for the TI-89 and TI-92+.

Update (Nick): I will say this once and once only:
IF YOU PUT AMS V2.04 ON YOUR CALCULATOR, WE HOLD ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSIBILITY TO ANY FUNCTIONALITY OF THE PROGRAMS YOU DOWNLOAD FROM THIS SITE. VERY FEW, IF ANY, ASSEMBLY PROGRAMS, WILL PROBABLY WORK. TI HAS BEEN KNOWN TO DECREASE COMPATIBILITY WITH EVERY SINGLE ROM VERSION AND THEIR "ENHANCEMENTS" USUALLY MEAN THAT ASSEMBLY PROGRAM LIMITATIONS HAVE BEEN PUT IN. DO NOT ASK US WHEN AUTHORS WILL PUT IN SUPPORT FOR V2.04: THAT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE AUTHORS ALONE.
Thank you. :)

Update (Nathan): Okay, I know everyone's too lazy to do it themselves, so I'll just say that I upgraded to AMS 2.04, and DoorsOS II v0.96 installs, but doesn't work (Address error when trying to run Doors). Patrick Davidson informed us that Universal OS works perfectly under this crazy new AMS version, but only under hardware v1.00. So now you've been warned, and as usual, we don't want to hear about it if your programs don't work. Ask the authors, not us. Thank you. :)

Update Purple Monkey Dishwasher (Nick): I've gotten about six or seven emails that this ROM version in fact does transfer over successfully with a black link. Some people were, however, complaining about speed issues.

Double Update Action (Nick): Matt Baum gave me an email showing a brief list of programs and their functionality under this new AMS. It might be of help to some of you.

Why is everyone trying doors?? Try TEOS!! It's the bomb. I've never had problems with it (I'm not sure about AMS 2.04 though). You should try every shell before you say that assembly doesn't work. It could be because doors has it's own rom calls. TEOS uses actual TIOS functions. Try it!

Not only did TI not mention this before it was released (I don't think they did anyway), they also dated the website as May 11, 2000.

Instead of pre-announcing things, they make it look like its been out for a month and we are all idiots for not noticing.

Just some random thoughts,

Haven't tried yet, but I'm guessing that almost all of the programs written using TiGCC in nostub mode probably work on AMS v2.04. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Zeljko?

I hope so, it a program is compiled in "nostub" mode. About 95% of TIGCCLIB features are based only on LEGAL TIOS FUNCTIONS, so problems are possible only if AMS 2.04 introduces some radical changes in TIOS routines. But, proving or rejecting this requires a months of testing... Nearly each routine must be checked...

Anyway, I don't like "Doors" mode: I implement it only because users want it.

Actually, I have a program that only compiles in Doors mode. Don't ask me why; I'm not doing anything 'illegal'. However, if I try to compile this in NoStub mode, the linker gives me a message that NoStub mode is not compatible with ROM calls, RAM calls, and libraries.

Well I think it really isn't compatible with libraries and romcalls if you use them in the source. That's one of the restrictions in nostub mode

Mines92+ works on 2.04 if anyone is interested (click on the link above if you have Internet Explorer 4 or better).

Programs written in nostub mode with TI-GCC do indeed work on the new AMS. Anyone who does C programming should upgrade because of the 24k limit (assuming you are programming for nostub instead of doors).

On a sidenote, how is it that AMS 2.04 language localizations have an earlier date than the actual AMS (May 5 versus May 11)?

I am assuming that when you say HW 1.00 you mean AMS 1.00? Well if you do, all you have to do is e-mail TI. They sent me AMS 1.00 a long time ago, they will send it to you. Also, this is the only legal way to get it back that I am aware of.

You're talking about Ams 1.00, not HW1. That's different(eh).
HEY ! When you buy a TI89, how do you know if you're getting a HW1 calc or a HW2 one ? I'm going to buy someday a TI92+ and I want a HW2 one. Or should-I-wait for another new calc ? Have you noticed the new Algebra fx2 from Casio ? it's just like TI89 but it doesn't have 3D graph, and some others diferences.

All TI-92+'s are HW2. The only way to get a HW1 TI-92+ is to buy a TI-92 and upgrade it with a Plus module.

There is no sure way to tell for the TI-89 (although, I do remember hearing about 89's that ship with AMS 2.03 having different packages).

There is a way to tell on the 89. If it doesn't say in the about screen, it's HW 1.00, if it DOES say, it's whatever it says (I'm staring at mine as I type this, and the first line of About says "TI-89 Hardware Version 2.00")

He meant, how can you tell from the box before you buy it/open it if it's HW1 or HW2.

I have a HW1 and i have just recently upgraded to rom 2.04. And i have tested almost all of the programs that i have on my calc when i had rom 2.03. I used Universal OS (the latest version), and it works 100% as it did in rom2.03. All we need is maxmem because when you try to install maxmem, it says "This is not a HW1 2.03 Calculator". I am sure it would work if this was not there, I sure hope Julien Muchembled (author of MaxMem and, I think, HW2Patch) updates this very soon. Yo, Julien, we hollarin at ya man! Respond.
