Tex v0.2.0 Alpha by Guillaume de Vivies and Loic Minier
Posted by Nick on 25 May 2000, 23:25 GMT

Aside from the initial shock of a French programmer actually claiming their file, Tex v0.2.0 Alpha is pretty neat. Designed by Guillaume de Vivies and Loic Minier as a front-end to Teos (but it should work on any shell), this looks pretty nice at first glance. It includes many file and folder functions, support for passwords, a real-time bench (whatever that is), and battery level detection. You can snag this fine spec-o-mine for the 89 and the 92 Plus.

very nice file manager. alot better than doorsOs.I only wish they came out with Linux for the 89 and a qwerty keyboard attachment for the calc.I hate the keypad that comes with the 89 and i dont like the 92 qwerty keypad(too small).Maybe if i have time in my very BUSY life i might have the time to code some C and make some sort of Linux Os(command prompt - need qwerty keyboard very badly;support for network on calcs - using some sort of infared, radio, hub or computer;etc - the limitions are just your imagination and the calcs speed).Again i like the idea of just a manager but i believe the 89 can do more then just go search the vat and display the filename on the screen. If people programming for the 89 don't hurry up and come up with a good os soon the 86 is going to kick A** when they release YAS with command prompt support, calc emulation, etc.Look at Tinux that came out a while back that is probable the best shell that has come out for the 86. windows that close, move, get smaller or bigger, file manager, mouse, icons.Whats with that.Just want to inform the ti89 community.Like Tex:)

If you want a cool 89 shell with windows that close, move, etc. then take a look at Prosit, prosit.ticalc.org. It has windows, greyscale, and other cool stuff (check out Torus!!!). On the keyboard issue, there are really neat folding keyboards for PDAs like the Palm Pilot that would be perfect for an 89. They could be carried in a pocket and connected when needed. However, I really don't know if there's any way to connect such a keyboard to a TI-89. You'd have to buy some special hardware at least. If there's anyone out there who has the technical know-how to create an adapter to connect a PDA folding keyboard to a TI-89, Please do so! You could sell them easily! It would be great to be able to type notes in class on an actual keyboard connected to an 89!

I tried this new OS and the first time i ran it, it crashed my calc......was this just an isolated incident??? I like the way it is set up and the explorer is set up much better than Doors.....I like the idea of the folding keyboard....but i can type almost as fast on my calculator's keyboard as i can on a regular keyboard....but it would be a nice addition....
just my thoughts....

Unfortunately, the current version of Prosit doesn't seem to run very well, however, older versions are available that work much better. The current version seems only to work on VTI (?!) but development is continuing, and hopefully a new, better version will come out soon.

WHEN WILL A GOOD TEXT EDITOR COME OUT FOR ION??!?!?!?

I think the subject says it all. I know this is impossible, but wouldn't it be nice if there was a ION for all calcs, and programs for any calculator worked on all of them? (Hey, I can dream)

No, I'd rather everything be like the 86; no kernels like Ion, Teos, or DoorsOS necessary, just good ol' Asm( or the cool shells like YAS or ASE with emulation (and there are no shell-specific titles)

That's a good ideal for the 89/92+ family; however the 8x calculators have little, if any, assembly support. TI seems to avoid making calculators fully assembly compatible... see what happened when they didn't do it for the 85, and ZShell was created (gotta love ZShell...)...

Great shell, but when I try to view the required libs of a program, it crashes my calculator. Does this happen to anyone else?

Why is it beta progs always crash? The first time I ran IE beta, it created this black hole in my hard drive( put the contents of the entire drive into my Program Files\ie\ dir, including that folder.... so it was like an endless mirror/black hole thing) Anyone know why it did that? Any way, i had to format, and I learned a valuable lesson: It's hell being an early adopter.

S'better than using Netscape 4. Haven't tried 6 yet (5's not good enough, huh???). Unless they get their act together and
a) Fix the damn bugs!
b) Support actual HTML standards rather than what Netscrap programmers would /prefer/ to be HTML standards.
then I would switch from IE5. But not just now...

Don't even bother with NS 6. It has a cool interface and is integrated with AIM and a translation utility is right in a handy menu, but its website rendering capabilities are pretty bad right now. HTML standards are probably not a feature of NS 6. Of course, this is based off of PR1. Maybe the final release will be better...

WTF are you smoking? Have you ever read ANYTHING about Mozilla/Netscape 6? The whole point is that it is the most standards compliant browser ever by a long shot. Next closest is IE 5.5 for Macs, and that's not even close.

Actually, the problems some people are having is that the browser is TOO standards compliant. View ticalc is IE 5.x or NS 4.x, then view it in NS6 PR1 - notice how the spacing between those tables disappears? That's because both of the older browsers automatically put spaces in there, even though they don't belong there according to the specifications. NS6 is actually the CORRECT rendering of the page.

Whether or not the display of the page is HTML "Correct" matters less than whether or not the page is displayed as intended. In this case, it seems to me that displaying the spacing, the way the page was intended to appear, is much better than conforming to some standard that no one else follows. If everyone suddenly started programming "correct" HTML, this wouldn't be a problem, but that's not likely to happen.

Actually, I was using Netscape for a while today, and together with Windows 98 (yuck), my computer crashed a total of 26 times (there were 26 new files in my Dr. Watson folder). Then, I quit Netscape, and it crashed 8 times without it. I don't really care which crashes more. It's just the fact that it crashes that gets to me.

Windows Me, anyone?

>Why is it beta progs always crash?

Hmmm... "beta"... 1.The second letter of the Greek alphabet. 2.<i>comp. sci.</i> Early releases by programmers intended mainly for mass testing.

Okay, so it's not quite a true dictionary definition, but I think you get the idea.

In my case it doesn't crash but it escapes the program

Well, mine does escape the program with 'Address Error' in the status bar, but I know that when you get this, your calculator becomes unstable, and it crashes any minute.
