Virtual TI Surpasses ZShell For Most Downloaded File
Posted by Steve on 20 May 2000, 03:20 GMT

Virtual TI just passed ZShell v4.0 in the top downloaded files list. Each file has close to 50,000 downloads - 10,000 more than the third most downloaded file. ZShell has held this record from the time ticalc.org was created. Without ZShell, ticalc.org and the TI calculator community would not exist. VTI has made great progress over the past year and has been trailing ZShell for quite some time. Congratulations to Rusty Wagner for this outstanding achievement.

Update (Nick): Here's some added information I was going to put in my news post, but Steve got the drop on me. Enjoy! :)

In the four years that ticalc.org has been around, ZShell has *always* been the top download. It was almost a fixation on our site. The original ZShell page was merged into ticalc.org at the beginning of the site, so it's no surprise that it would rank among the most popular files.

For those of you who don't know, ZShell was created by our very own Magnus Hagander, Dan Eble, and Rob Taylor. It was the very first assembly shell for the 85, and without it, you probably wouldn't ever see assembly-based programs for any calculator. Ever.

Virtual TI is made by Rusty Wagner. VTI will emulate any TI graphing calculator (except the 81, 80 and 73) on your computer. Over the past months and years, it has become an indespensible tool for programmers, developers, and the staff of this very site.

As of this posting, 17.0% of our users do not know what ZShell is.

Update (Nathan): Uh, Nick... you screw up our precise, scientific survey results when you put in an explanation of ZShell on the main page. ;) ZShell was a tremendous victory for calc hackers--at least VTI is another massively successful programming feat. Fitting that it is a platform on which ZShell can be kept alive as TI-85 sales dwindle...

I just thought I'd mention it so he could go correct it. I actually expected him to delete my comment after he fixed it, like he normally does. But you have to admit, a typo in an article headline is pretty hard to miss...

How could someone possibly spell "downloaded" wrong on such an important news item?

Why? What's wrong with it?

it says "downlaoded", instead of "downloaded".

I'm guessing that there are a million news articles and that statistically, there must be error sooner or later. In fact, it would be questionable if it didn't happen. I'm no advocate of typos but I see them all the time..even at the New York Times Online a few of the articles have typos or have a random br tag inserted.

Times are changing, technology is never constant.

So then, if were walking foreward, why are we looking backward?

Haven't you ever heard the saying "history repeats itself"?

You're looking backwards? You're not using Windows, are you? Hmm, maybe that's why... Lol, and they think that they are 'innovative' just because they copy the best of everyone's ideas and add bugs to them.

Hmmm...

First, I do use Windows

Second, exactly who are you addressing with "Lol, and they think that they are 'innovative' just because they copy the best of everyone's ideas and add bugs to them."? A person would realize he was not innovative from the critism he resieved from "everyone's ideas" that he "added bugs to".

Third, who, or what is "Lol"? You seem to be the only person I've seen use this term.

Fourth, remember the topic here, unless I'm completely misunderstanding what you are saying, your comment doesn't belong in this section.

Fifth, when I asked why people were looking backwards, I ment to ask why people were so hung up on what has already happened, as if they can change it or something. As far as "history repeating itself" (not your comment), the phrase has very specific applications. Perhaps shells and emulators being revising to better forms is one, but not the specifics, as many people here are discussing.

Sixth, why are you speaking to me so angrily. If I made a complete fool of myself, there are better ways of telling me so.

Part of the reason that VTI has so many downloads is that it is for EVERY calculator, but ZShell is just for the 85. Also, ZShell is no longer the best, and VTI is, so many more people will download VTI in the future, as well.

very good point... but don't you think the same happened for ZShell?

Hey rusty, great program! But I'd like to see you expand VTI to other calcs. I'm sure you will, but hurry up! May VTI live long and prosper! (sorry about the terrible cliche) Keep up the good work.

what calculators has he NOT expanded to? it emulates every calc except the 73/80/81 (and you aren't missing much with those, the 81 is pretty ugly with the blue and no link port from the 80/81 means no ROM, and 73's don't have assembler yet, so there's no point).

If you mean emulate other company calculators like HPs, then he'd have to name it V-TI-HP, and that isn't exactly a nice name

No, I meant TI calcs. No, I don't mean the 73/80/81 calcs. I went to the ROM wizard on VTI, and it had nothing for 82s! I know he's going to fix that, but I'm just encouraging him to hurry up.

There are other ways to get your 82's ROM. There's a nice little assembly program that will do it for you, so you don't need to rely on VTI.

use an 82 rom program then; I think it'll still emulate it

HP offers emulators for all their calculators on their site. It is a great idea, because people it helps people choose which calculator is best for them. The emulators they offer aren't anywhere near the quality of VTI, though.
