Texas Instruments Announces USB-Based TI-GRAPH LINK
Posted by Nick on 15 April 2000, 03:02 GMT

Laurent Goujon was the first of about eighty-six thousand, nine hundred and three people to notify me that TI is going to release a USB TI-GRAPH LINK near the end of the year (read: june of 2001). There's not much more information about it, but it seems to be compatible only with Macintoshes (read: iMac's). Check the page out here.

Do we really need a USB Link cable. My Serial one works just fine! I'm not about to go out and by a new cable. P.S. Whats that about Macs only.

Why not? There are USB floppy drives, keyboards, scanners and speakers (maybe modems too). With well written driver we can make TI calculators independent from PC machines.

Wow! I was thinking about an USB link cable the other day... I have a link for my iMac tho... i have a Serial to USB adapter and it works fine. The reason this maybe Mac only is because: Macs are still dominate in the education market and iMac's don't have a way to connect a calc to it (unless you went the route that i did and bought a Serial to USB adapter). However, I do agree with everyone that there should be a PC version because serial just sucks and this will get more and more PC users to stop using that old 80's technology. I think they will though. They are just making and developing drivers for the oh so popular iMac first ;)

DannyMac now sits and waits for the PC lamer's flames over the "They are just making and developing drivers for the oh so popular iMac first" comment.

(Just a non-flame from a PC user)

Haven't seen many iMacs used in computer labs yet. The only new Mac hardware I've seen there are G3's. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they have serial ports? I doubt the education aspect figures much into it.

I think the reason is that iMac owners were getting the short end of the stick. The only way you could do it would be to get a serial adapter for USB. (I'd get one anyway, some have printer ports as well...)

At my school's computer lab we now have several iMacs and about 6 G4s. Very cool. All I'm saying is that schools do sometimes buy new hardware and a USB TI-cable is a very good idea. It may not get too much use right now, but, as more new computers are bought, USB will soon become the only way to go, and the only computers with serial are old computers.

Hmmm....I have a feeling there will be plenty of time to discuss this.
Given TI's track record, I estimate it being released somewhere around August 2017. Give or take a month. :)

Why would texas instruments go to all the bother of producing the software for a PC if it is only going to sell for the macs, if you own a PC then you are perfectly capable of buying a parallel port version of the TI-Graph link, probably at what will turn out to be a much lower price. PC users stop winging about it only working with us privaliged mac users, if you had had some sense in the first place and bought a mac, you would be able to buy the link.
