SomeGame v0.64 Released By Niklas Brunlid
Posted by Nick on 30 March 2000, 05:59 GMT

SomeGame v0.64 Our own Niklas Brunlid has made an update to his popular SomeGame for the 89 and 92 Plus. Released under the GPL, SomeGame v0.64 is a clone of the popular SameGame for old console systems such as the Atari, had me hooked in the form of Martin Hock's Insane Game for the 85 back in the day. To this end, I must endorse this game to as great an extent as I possibly can, and I implore you to download it for the 89 and the 92 Plus.

For those of you who don't know what SameGame/SomeGame/Insane Game is, you must clear all the shapes (or, in this case, differently colored circles) from a screen by clearing clumps of two or more shapes that are adjacent to each other. The object is to clear the whole screen - for doing so, your final score is quadrupled.
Easy to learn, impossible to master. And I mean impossible - especially when the amount of different shapes increases.
Though this game has been out for a few weeks now and the update covers just a few minor bugfixes, it warrants a news item for this reason only: you will be addicted. Oh, and my all-time high score is 2,147. Enjoy :)

Hey great game. I love it. But is the author going to make a version so you play play it under the doors explorer? Since i don't like having to go to the varlink menu and choose the game everytime i play, (or type out the command)...

just wondering.

Nowadays I try to program in _nostub mode as much as I can - it almost guarantees HW/AMS compatability and there really isn't much of a size penalty to speak of. Libraries work just fine, too.

But making a DoorsOS version of SomeGame should be as easy as replacing one line in the source and recompiling, so stay tuned...

Nick's update is missing the whole point of why Niklas' samegame/insanegame/somegame/whatever is so much better than others -- variable playfield sizes. Anyone who's played before can relate to how much more complex the game is when running at 48x24 tiles (massive chains and scores, too =)

Uh.. that was implied.

Also, when you have three different shapes it's harder than if you have ten. It's much harder to clear the field that way (duh).

Larger fields mean more complex strategies, but more types of pieces turn the game into quite the quandary: it becomes quite frequent that you have to plan your moves three, four, even five or more moves in advance. This is where strategies emerge and the game becomes even more interesting.

Hey, the universe is one entire joke. Cool! That means I don't have to take any of my teachers seriously as they are jokes too.

Only Joking (someone shoot me, no, that was also a <etc>)

With a highscore like that, I think we have a pretty good idea of what Nick does in his spare time; =-)
Anyways, I was wondering what [Perl?] counter program you guys use - was it supplied by the server? - is it written custom for ticalc.org? - or where can I download it?

For those of you who don't really read anything on the message board in the first place, read the previous comment. The message board is used for discussion and general comments about the ARTICLE. I think if you want to know something like how to get past a boss in a game, E-mail someone. I'm trying to read these articles, and all these miscellaneous comments are a displeasure to see. As for samegame/somegame/insanegame, i think they're cool, and if anyone has a high score that they think can't be beat, please E-mail me.

Then shouldn't we all agree not to respond to these questions?

But then, where is one supposed to post such questions? ticalc lacks an unofficial newsboard, thus preventing those people who have such questions from doing so. Hence, the only place for them to post IS off topic on a news message board.

Yes... I've noticed this problem too. But I'm sure ticalc.org has a reason for not having one, seeing as they can effortlessly create a new board for every news article, survey, etc. Fun with scripts. So it's not like it's hard to make a message board, but there has to be a reason why there isn't one.

Hay, Nick, what mode did you get that high score on? I played on Milli and got 4656. If you don't believe me, I could get you a screenshot (I played it in VTI). This game is awesome, I think I'll put it on my actual calc.

Am I the only one who hates insane game? It's impossible to clear it all! I'm not addicted at all. Give me ZTetris anyday! >32000 points!

Actually, you can clear the screen. I did it when before I got the high score I put in a message a few hours ago.

Somegame and samegame and insanegame are all pretty good, but they take patience and strategy. As for ZTetris, I scoff at your high score. My highest was 41000+ on ZTetris v1.6.
