Geometer's Sketchpad For the 92 Plus
Posted by Nick on 4 March 2000, 21:24 GMT

Geometer's SketchpadIn another attempt to justify the existence of the 92 Plus, TI has released The Geometer's Sketchpad for the 92 Plus. This only works for AMS v2.03 and it is only released for the 92 Plus. It lets you create and analyze mathematical models and geometric diagrams. It is included in the purchase price of the TI-92 Plus (re: it's free). This can be a fantastic program for anyone who is doing geometry, but ironically, nobody in a geometry class (re: high school sophomores) would drop $160-180 on a TI-92 Plus. Download it from this page.

Geometry isn't limited to what's taught in high school. The TI-92 Plus was designed for use in college and the professional world, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Geometer's Sketchpad reflects that, with some pretty advanced stuff.

I used the Mac version of Geometer's Sketchpad in 7th grade at school. "Advanced faetures?" I think that TI is just trying to provide some benefits to the poor people who got stuck with a behemoth calculator that is not even allowed on the SAT/ACT. After the 89 came out, with basically the same functionality, TI had to justify the reason they charged up to $75 more for the 92/II/Plus. So they released some mostly useless (on such a small screen) software to make the 92/II/Plus users think they had some "benefits" that us 89 users lack. It also probably helps with sales currently because they can claim "TI-92 Plus with AMS and Geometry."

The TI-89 isn't allowed on the SAT either- you're just not as likely to be caught using it.

When have companies ever felt bad about selling consumers a product (that isn't dangerous?) TI doesn't have to justify anything. (Most) people purchase an item because they feel that what they are getting in return suits their needs, and is a good exchange for monetary substance.

the 89 is allowed on the SAT; the SAT hasn't banned CAS's, only personal computers (electronic devices with QWERTY keyboards, aka the 92)

You're right- I was thinking of another test. Still, I don't think a TI-89 would give you significant advantages over a TI-82. If you think you need those extra functions, you're probably going to get the question wrong because you're not aiming at the question correctly. The test is designed to evoke reaction answers, including some which you might be inclined to stick into your calculator before thinking about them.

actually, it IS allowed - the proctor inspected all of our calculators before we began the test, and about two people including me had ti-89's. but, since the problems are pretty easy anyway (take the ACT, now that's a REAL test :-P) i barely used the capabilities it had except the ones that the scientific calcs have (i.e. +,-,*,/) :)

The ACT allows neither the TI-92 or the TI-89. See above URL.

This is unrelated, but what is a TI-92 II? I heard about it a couple of times, but I don't know what it is.

The TI-92 II is, I believe (I don't know that much about it), a rom version of the TI-92 that was made for Europe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was a 2 meg rom while the original 92 was only a 1 meg rom. I think it had some localization things added in and a little more memory and faster processor too. Some assembly programs require a 92 II becuase they would run too slow on a standard 92.

I've seen TI-92 IIs for sale here in the U.S., in Office Depots and places like that.

The TI-92 II is a plain TI-92 with both memory banks occupied (it has 256 Kb of RAM). This means that the CPU can read from the two memory banks in parallell instead of reading twice from one (like the old 92 did), which in theory makes the memory twice as fast. The calc only got about 50% faster though, since not everything is done via the memory.
In Tinx2 i unfortunately took advantage of this and put too much into an interrupt handler... which meant that the game ran fine on a TI-92 II but only ran interrupt code on a plain TI-92... :o)

what's up with the "included in the purchase price" stuff? why can't ti just say it's "free"?

Is it just my computer or has everything Involving Mem Adder v1.0 for the Ti-83 just dissapeared?

It was there this afternoon. It was a hoax. It displayed a fake mem screen:) Too bad, it would have been neat if it did even though the TI-83 does not even have 168k RAM in the calc:)

so why did they delete it? there's about two other programs at least like this in other archives... not to mention about 50 other "fake viruses", "fake mem clearers", etc...

They could also make it a fake news item.
