Rare TI Calculator Prototype
Posted by Michael on 8 February 2007, 22:18 GMT

[TI PLT SHH1] Joerg Woerner of the Datamath Calculator Museum has been kind enough to share with us photos and information about a never-released TI prototype calculator: the PLT SHH1, featuring an OMAP 1510 processor, 16 MB RAM, and a SD slot. In conjunction with its PLT WS1 cradle, it also had 802.11b wireless capability. Joerg is asking that anyone with additional information about this calculator e-mail him.

well, that's very off topic

but in other news, Netham45 thinks that this calculator Should be made, as long as it is within a certain price range. If it costs like $500 dollars, than people won't buy it and they would loose money. but if it costs as much as an 89 then they should go for it.

I have to ask, but do you always refer to yourself in third person?

I read somewhere that talking about one's self in third person causes brain damage...

Not trying to flame anyone, but;
Brain damage is caused by:
1: Repeated playing of pointless calculator games (Can't help this)
2: Talking to one's self too much (It happens)
3: Answering one's self (Pray this doesn't happen)
4: Posting over 10 posts that end in a terrible miscount around 54

I may or may not be referring to someone, who, if I am referring to a person, I will not name at this time.

Not to mention the gamma or microwave radiation from constant cell phone usage! Look down any street, and those things are literally glued to people's ears! Maybe TI will make a calc with a built in cell phone, then maybe I will have an excuse to use it in class... Now THAT would be a rare prototype!

I wouldn't buy this device, for its lack of buttons. Who wants to have to navigate through a GUI just to get to a math function that should be mapped to a key?

I've mentioned something to that sort earlier, doing math that is quick on an 89TI would take longer on this rig, from the random menu access, or catalog browsing. The big screen though, that would make a nice display for the "Closed GL" and the processor would definitely support that. This thing could fit all the calc emulators in it's RAM! (Still probably couldn't use it on the ACT though... F-ing calculator regulations...)

Too bad it didn't have a touchscreen - then it could just keep the base set of physical keys, and put the others on an onscreen keyboard (a good idea if it's done right) so keys which were unnecessary for the context could be left out.

I think that's probably why it didn't make it on the market. It would take too long on tests, like the SAT and some standardized tests, where time is precious.

The pictures called something up from me - Is this project picked up by Apple?
I have took a good look at a Apple iPod Touch MP3 Player. The owner has installed a CAS to it, so I can use the iPod as if it is a PLT SHH1 or a PLT FHH1, but with a nice color display and built-in 802.11b/g connectivity.
