Kartingz v1.00 for 68k
Posted by Michael on 20 August 2006, 20:17 GMT

[Kartingz] Kartingz is a racing game for the 68k calculators. In Kartingz, the track rotates instead of the car, making for interesting gameplay. There are two modes, one racing against the clock and the other against your previous fastest time for three laps.

Great game, a true technical acomplishment! Those who badmouth it need to pipe down and actually give it a try. Congratulations for your efforts and for this release, you managed to squeeze a lot of speed out of the old 68k.

My only question is whether the .SAV file is supposed to be 12kb in size? I also hope that you will consider making more maps in the future.

Thanks a lot!

Yes, it is supposed to be this big because of the ghosts that are stored for every map. A ghost takes at most 3ko, that's why the SAV file takes 3*numberOfMaps ko.
If I do new maps, I will probably change the way the SAV file is stored so that it uses only the amounts of memory that is actually used.

And thanks.

Then a small suggestion, how about archiving the save file automatically when it generates it?

Good idea, I'll do that instead.

I agree!

That is some super fast rotation of the entire screen.

i think it would be a very good game if u could make an 84+ version of it

I am not sure it's possible, even though the screen of the 84+ is much smaller.

JfG: I'm too lazy to look at the source code right now, but does this game use any "tricks" to draw the map on the screen, or does it simply loop over every pixel and calculate its map coordinates? Does it re-use most of the screen from the previous frame when it is only translated (ie, not rotated)?

The engine works by displaying rotated tiles. The tiles are 12x12, so that once they are rotated, they can be drawn using 16x16 sprite routines without losing content.
Of course, if a tile is displayed 20 times in a frame, it is only rotated once.
Also, white sprites aren't rotated or drawn at all.

Finally, the screen does not scroll when there is only a translation because the frame rate would appears to diminish a lot when rotation occurs.
I re-rotate all the tiles even when it's not needed for the same reason.

this game requires 150k of free rom, which means, if you got a titanium and got a lot games (and the required patches) on it, you cannot play it since there's no other way to free up ram beside deleting other game.

Is there something on the titanium that prevents the archiving of games? I used to do that all the time on my 89, and the titanium has the same amount of RAM, but with much more ROM...

There isn't problem with archiving games. But somehow, I archived all games and variable, and, in fact, I did a clear ram in the 2nd-mem menu, but I still only got 130k of ram...strange

if you have all the apps that came with it that would explain it because they use both rom and ram

After you are done archiving the games, just do a LEFT-RIGHT-2ND-ON Reset on the calculator and check your memory again. It should be freed up now.
It works on my Titanium but I don't know why it happens(maybe bad memory management in the calc...)
