More TI Contests
Posted by Michael on 26 June 2006, 15:19 GMT

Just like last year, TI is offering several contests on 84silver.com, their promotion site for the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition. The infamous GraphiTI contest is back and is now open to both teachers and students. Hopefully there will be less vote stuffing this year. There is also a $8,400 scholarship and an essay contest available.

After looking at the other designs, I think mine has a good chance of winning! It hasn't been approved yet, but when it is I'll post a link here.

And again, I'll say that you should look at 84silver.com. If there are any updates, ticalc.org staff will of course hear about them *after* TI releases announcements or whatever, so that would be the best place to check.

Nice! Now that the Photoshop and GIMP masters can upload their images, I bet the winners are going to be really good designs this time instead of ones with generic backgrounds and "math rox" scribbled on them.

Am I the only one who finds the entry in my link remarkably familliar? It's currently in 5th place. I swear I've seen it before somewhere, can't say where though.

What does TI do if it finds that an entry is copied off something else? Does it bump them and promote the 11th place entry?

You probably have seen it before. I found an copy of that picture on my computer in "My Pictures", in a folder called "Sample Pictures." The only difference is that the entry was cropped.

Yeah, that was cut directly from one of the sample pics that came with WinXP. It looks nice on a sticker, but still, I thought this was supposed to be original work. Anyone willing to verify this pixel-by-pixel and report it?

Aha! I thought it was one of those, I couldn't find it in my My Pictures (hah, that sounds silly) folder. I located a shortcut to it in the "Default User" one though. Submissions should be totally original, here's a quote from the rules:

"By entering, entrants represent and warrant that their submissions:
* Are their own original creations;"

It appears to have been scaled so as to be slightly thinner than the original, so I don't think it can be verified on a per-pixel basis. The original can be scaled slightly so as to lie almost exactly on top though.

Should I report it though the "Customer Assistance" form? There's nowhere else I can see of a more specific nature.

Yeah, I was going to report it myself, with a picture of the WinXP pic and the sticker side-by-side so it could be compared. Unfortunately, the original picture was on a different computer so I still haven't done it.

I had looked through their help pages, and they seem to all redirect to that one. I guess it's the only way...

"Dear Roy,

Thank you for contacting Texas Instruments. We appreciate your interest in and support of Texas Instruments technology and products.

You inquired regarding what is acceptable for images submitted in the GraphiTI contest. It is my understanding that as long as the image is in a format acceptable to the contest engine then there is no further criteria which needs to be met.

The 'Top Ten' are there by virtues of the number of votes. The finalist will be judged according to the contest criteria of "Creativity" (50%), and "Use of Tools" (50%)."

Bah humbug. I've replied, this time actually quoting from the rules (should've done that before, whoops!). It's not that big a deal, of course, but if they manage to actually end up in the top ten by the end I'm going to be rather angry.

It took quite literally 3 clicks to make it ("Browse", type in the address, "Open", "Upload"). It didn't even need to be cropped beforehand, either, the Flash drawing thing does it for you.

That's insane! They don't even know their own rules (or at least that PR guy doesn't)!

I've seen it too. It's a sample pic from Windows XP.
Chesk in My Pictures, and open the Sample pictures folder.
