TI Knowledge Base
Posted by Michael on 10 May 2006, 05:25 GMT

Recently, it was brought to my attention that there exists a wonderful resource on the TI website: The knowledge base. While TI has had this previously, in the past few months they have added a great deal of useful information. Examples include required battery voltage, order of calculator release, a statement of the policy regarding ROMs and emulators, and juicy tidbits like the algorithm used to calculate the inverse of a matrix. Some of you may already be aware of this knowledge base, but it appears to me to be underutilized. This is also the only place on the TI website to find information about older or discontinued calculator models.

I knew they had a knowledge base, but I rarely use it, as their search algorithm nevere really worked, and Google can't crawl knowledgebases.

I think "Knowledge Base" is a specific database/frontend software for this kid of web-info., as Apple, TI, and a few other big corporations have "Knowledge Base"s.

And thanks for pointing me to the cool stuff!

Oracle is a big company. Very big.

Anyways the funny part is an oracle app is overkill for a knowledge base app like that. But oh well. It's enterprise!

Too bad they can't include reasons why TI-Connect will randomly stop working or why TI decided to not update their drivers for their graphing calculators.

I guess knowing that my calculator needs 6 volts is more important?

Sure it is! It is way more important than knowing what's new in the latest 84+ Rom update!

A nice feature, but I still think ticalc.org has a nicer database, as I have learned 99% of what I know about TI's from the logs and forums here. This seems to be orchestrated to more parents/students who don't know much about their calculator, especially not programming and games, but rather want to know the basics of how to use their brand new $120 calc.

Well yeah, they've got a more "consumer-oriented" site, so if you want to find out technical info somewhere else like ticalc.org is the place to look.

I was reading the part about ROMs and it said that you can't disassemble them. so does that mean that it is illeagle to jump into a rom routine whith VTI or TIEMU.

That's really stupid if it's true, and I'm going to keep on disassembling my ROMs anyways no matter what they say. *goes off muttering about proprietary software and restrictions on reverse-engineering*

Does this mean that the emulators on this site are illeagle?

No, it just means that you can't take the ROM apart to figure out how it works.

Look not to corporate copyright holders for an accurate interpretation of copyright law.

If you downloaded the OS from TI's web site, then you probably agreed to their EULA in the process, which does quite clearly state what you are and are not permitted to do with it.

If, however, you have been living in a box with no Internet connection (oh! the horror!) and you bought a calculator from a store and downloaded its ROM to your computer, then there is nothing stopping you -- legally or technically -- from disassembling it, running it in an emulator, or doing anything else you like on your own machine. You have no right to distribute the OS or its disassembly, though.

In most European countries, EULA provisions against reverse engineering are mostly unenforceable, there are some limits as to what types of reverse-engineering are allowed (disassembling and then copying&pasting the disassembled code is of course a copyright violation), but EULAs may not set further limits. Sadly, the USA allows contracts or EULAs to override many of the customer-friendly laws, European countries tend to have such laws prevail instead.
