Wizards for the 83/83+
Posted by Michael on 2 October 2005, 05:25 GMT

[Wizards] Wizards for the 83/83+ is a member of an often underrepresented segment of calculator gaming: card games. According to the author, it is similar to Magic: The Gathering. In Wizards you are fighting against other creatures in order to win cards and money so as to progress to the top. I really know absolutely nothing about card games, so if you like card games, just download it.

This game simply seems to rock. Normally, I hate collectable card games, but this on-calc version is simple, makes sense, and it's fun. Forget all the bonus cards and such, just get two-player mode down and I'll rate this a 10/10!

One interesting way two player mode might be accomplished is by using one calc. Just allow the user to pick two saves, then pass the calc back and forth. I know that it wouldn't have quite the coolness factor of link mode, but it would be playable.

Maybe an option for either of the two.. the user could choose whether it would be 1 player, 2 player-same calc, or 2 player link..

well the author said an app version may be necessary for multiplayer and i think people should vote on wether they want an app version or a program with upgrades. however i think most people already want app version. maybe some relly good programmer should help the author of this program.

Trust me, Nano probably wont need any help. He is already a great programmer. Plus if he would need anyhelp, Revolution software: www.revsoft.org has a well reputable staff. With some great projects coming in the future. We have a forum, check us out, and post your ideas there!

Actually, I'd prefer not having an app. Apps seem to take up a lot more memory then "normal" asm programs (why do all apps take up 16k or 32k?!), and games like bubble bobble could do multiplayer with a mirageos version.

If the final version was an App, I'd still play it. I just like having more of my memory free.

APPs take up even multiples of 16384 bytes because that is the size of one ROM page. APPs take up one ROM page. Always.

well let me re vote: i say app only if thats the last resort for more cards and multiplayer. and if the author doesn't need programming help, we should at least help him with card ideas.

I haven't had a chance to try your program yet, how closely is it based off of Magic? That is to say, would it be useful if I re-found the Wizards of the Coast card archive URL?

This is a flaw in this game after I beat everything and have most of the cards my money just keep piling up. And there is no way to spend it. I think You should have some really powerful card with very high price that's only sold in the shop.

You can have ards like ultimateshild that blocks 2 damage. And ultra Aether regen, cost 1 but give back 3. Also there's ummm petapotion that cost3 and heals2 hp per ter for five turns.

Maybe you could have some randomly generated cards. I don't know how you'd do the graphics for them though.

Random graphics!!!

With this, you wouldn't need to explicitly program the Unglued deck.

Very good game. However, I suggest that you have upgrades to strength and max. health. Also, for some reason, I can't add cards I won to my deck, and I beat all 3 bosses but the fourth group is still locked. Then again, that could be my computer or my calc making errors and stuff.

This seems to be happening more and more, make sure you sent the Ion combatible file. There are two different .8xp files, one that only works in Mirage.

If you did sent the Ion combatible .8xp file, then I suggest you get a better shell such as CrunchyOS or MirageOS, both APPS. They will open up even more games for your calc.

"Better shell" they may be, but I've actually stopped using MirageOS and switched to Ion most of the time because I usually have 6-7 APPs on my 83+ normal, and ~20kb in math notes, leaving me no archive left.
My APPs are Calcsys, Inequality Graphing, Omnicalc, Sketchy, Symbolic, Transformation Graphing, and Unit Ops.
That was in the spring. Now that I'm in college, I transferred my notes to my v200, so I have room for a few games and MirageOS.

MirageOS randomly clears your calc's ram... it completely destroyed my last calculator so switched to a more stable shell, i hate MirageOS

Probably a buggy program you had, not MirageOS itself.

lol why you gonna have it when you have no programs to run it with? mirage never crashed on me either. at one point i had over 48 programs on mirage and it ran just as fine as if i only had one program. 41 programs now and still running smoothly.

I know several people with 83+SEs that crash and wipe both RAM and Archive when they try to run Phoenix. It's random errors. These things happen. My calculator had to be sent in to TI after deleting an APP on OS 1.15. It would freeze up whenever it was garbage collecting, and it died when defragmenting. I then used 1.14 until 1.16 came out on my reconditioned calc.
