TI Offers Contests, Prizes
Posted by Michael on 26 July 2005, 05:12 GMT

Currently 84silver.com, TI's website promoting the TI-84 Plus, is hosting a number of contests. First is a competition for designing a GraphiTI design. That offers the chance at a $1000 shopping spree for you and some calculator equipment for your school. There is also a pure-chance contest offering an $8,400 college scholarship. Lastly, beginning on August 1, there will be a TI graphing calculator success story essay contest.

Anyone happen to know if the $1000 shopping spree is for TI-only stuff or actual money? For most of us here at ticalc.org we wouldn't mind TI-only stuff but some people who don't really care for calcs nearly as much as we do wouldn't take much advantage of this.

Wait. Are we allowed to vote Once a Day, or Once Total? In the "Official Rules", it says you can vote only once total, but when you try to vote, it says once a day?

If so... I'll be forever indebted to you if you kindly decide to vote for my cover. Anyone want to help a kid out?

Anyway. I wanted to use Photoshop for this, so I think the design is pretty good for the cruddy online thing they gave us. Oh well.

This had better not turn into a bunch of people asking for everyone to vote for their GraphiTI (or sticker, whatever) design...

Heh ^^; I won't ask on ticalc.org anymore, I just had to at first. I'm quite determined to win, and I'm not like a telemarketer: if someone tells me they don't wanna vote, I'll never ask them again. And I praise all who do vote for me. Currently I'm 2nd in place, hopefully 1st sometime soon.. and thanks for the vote, by the way :)

I submitted one with a plain gray background, that said "Got ASM?" on it, and it got rejected!! I have no idea why.

Maybe they don't like calculator programmers. But in the very least, you have to put in a real school, real zip code and all that. They have to verify it so they won't be awarding a prize to a place that doesn't legally exist.

They should allow you to buy stickers that you design and send to them. Sure you could make a sticker yourself at home but alot of people wouldn't want the hastle.

I move for a moratorium on voting for "mathmatical beauty" (curently #5), as its author has total disregard for spelling and capitalization in English.

And...motion passed!

How about the one in second place, "Mother of Pearls"? For one thing, it's supposed to be "Mother of Pearl", and from what I remember from my last visit to the music store, it looks like a ripoff of the cover of the Van Halen CD "Best of Both Worlds".

Theoretically, someone could write a program that would do the drawing for them, ie. translate the Photoshop image onto the Flash design program (which sucks) by drawing points of varying opacity and size.

Success story to TI? Mine would go like this:

I got a TI calc real cheap...about 40 dollars less than what the one in the TI store cost. Success! And going to their website, i saw that they have almost no apps, and most of the apps there do suck. So I searched and found ticalc.org, where there are thousands of files! Success!
