Monopoly for the 89
Posted by Michael on 25 December 2004, 03:36 GMT

[Monoply] This week, Mike Elgen updated his version of Monopoly for the 89. Monoply has been under development for the last 1.5 years according to the author, and it is a near clone of the classic board game. It is 89 Titanium compatible and can be the replacement should you not find Monopoly under your Christmas tree. Hopefully this turns out better than in the past.

Public notice: Everyone in the western hemisphere who celebrates Christmas must visit ticalc.org at least once tomorrow morning or your nerd level will drop 15%. That is all.

Just out of curiousity...is it spelled wrong on purpose?
Looks like an awesome game...grayscale and everything!

Unless the author misspelled his own game everywhere, "Monoply" is the proper spelling.

Yeah, they still can sue, but it's one less lawsuit :)

They're really lame if they sue you for making a calculator version of their board game.

Good job, I remember way back when you started working on this. I guess all the hard work payed off, right? :) Haha, "Monoply" just doesn't sound right--it needs that extra o. Hmm, you think they could sue if you called it "m0n0p0ly?" ;)

If anything they should be paying him.

I'm not really a big fan of monopoly and this 'Monoply' would probably drain my calcs batteries (if I had an 89) as the board game usually takes over 4 hours. Atleast with the freaken n00bs I play against.

How are you supposed to cheat!?

That's true... isn't it like free advertisement for their board game? I don't see why they should care. The same with Gran Tourismo. Why should they need to add the "o" in their game? Graphing Calculator != PS2.

<lame>I'm really good at cheating in Monopoly. ;-) It adds a new element to the game and makes it more exciting.</lame>

dude, that letter was so fake... why would they ask some random kid off the street when they can hire professionals to do it?

In theory. No one who's planning to buy the board game is going to decide NOT to buy it just because they can get a version for their calc.

It says RIGHT IN THE PROGRAM DESCRIPTION (or, if I remembered incorrectly, at least in the readme) that the program takes up less battery power than most other programs.

You guys hear about that guy in Canada named Mike Rowe?
He thought it'd be funny if he registered the domain 'mikerowesoft'. You can probably guess what happened.
The poor kid should've known better than to mess with the Micro$oft mafia.

Yeah, I remember what happened. He got an entire xbox library, a subscription to MSDN, and all the developer perks that MS could think of, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Redmond for a technology fair of some sort. Yeah, it's still silly and childish of MS, but Mike Rowe hardly got screwed.

I thought it looked cool. Forget it was ever there, since there was recently an argument about it. :^(

actually they can still sue him for each thing that is the same, depending on how much of it they claim, for example, the pieces, names of places etc.

at least this is the understanding of my dad...

They might be able to sue for trademark infringment still, because the word "monoply" is still very similar to "monopoly." (Just like M$ was able to sue Lindows for trademark infringement of Windows.)

Because it _is_ Monopoly for the 89, it just isn't CALLED "Monopoly".

It looks as though that is the spelling the author wants.
