TI Releases EZ-Spot TI-84 Pluses
Posted by Michael on 5 November 2004, 13:49 GMT

[EZ-Spot 84+]Texas Instruments has created a new line of calculators specifically designed to reduce thefts of school owned calculators. EZ-Spot Teacher Packs contain TI-84 Plus and TI-84 Plus Silver Edition calculators with bright yellow cases. Each calculator also has a yellow slidecase with "school property" inscribed in capital letters. EZ-Spot calculators are sold only to instructional dealers and will cost over $1000 for a pack of ten TI-84+s.

ha ha...poor kids at school! Now they are going to have to pay for their calcs not steal them. This is a very smart move by TI...and it would be a very smart move for the teachers to look into these!

what about when they upgrade to the next model and plan to get rid of these? I got a free 82 when the calculus class switched to TI-89s and the other classes to the 83+ a few years back...(went nicely with my 89 and broken 85...)

please note that by "free 82" I mean that I asked the teacher first and he said he wouldn't miss it... don't know that he had authorization to allow that or not, but *I* had permission...

Well, it's good that students won't be stealing the teacher's calculators as often (they still may... kids are stupid), but they could still steal other students' calculators... :\

At my school they ask you what your serial number is at the beginning of school to prevent that from happening.

You can always open it up and put your name inside the case... Of course that would void the warranty (unless you put it on a slip of paper, then if you remove the paper how will TI know you opened it? :p).

I think you can just edit the flash to get around that. Or am I thinking of something completely different? I'm talking about that number you see on your TI-89 when you press F1, alpha, a.

Oh wait, never mind, I know what you're talking about, now. And I think that is a good idea.

Same here. Of course, I also use Krolypto (and tell everyone about it), so they won't steal my calculator. Though the people who would actually steal at my school are interested in calculators...they are more into iPods and cell phones.

yeah... krolypto is a great password prog... i wish it looked more graphical like windows, cause when used on my calc it says "enter your password" and each key isn't a dot, but it's the multiplication symbol. Yeah, as you said, ipods and cellphones are the hot items, cuse everybody's got a calc and they don't really need another, but not many people have cellphones and/or ipods.

Everyone in my school has cell phones, but few people have "cool" cell phones. Most cell phones just are cell phones, not Game Boy emulator cell phones that everyone wants. As for iPods, only about 20 out of my school (2000 people) have iPods.

No, on my friend's (expensive) cell phone which cost $500 USD (scary I'd say), there is a GameBoy emulator. It's called LameToy to avoid copyright laws. I was playing Pokemon on it.

Personally i think this is not too good of a thing. many schools spent money on thier ti-82's and 83's. this is just a way for ti to make money by having the schools fork over even more money on something quite unneccesasary. maybe if teachers just locked up the calcs after use, they wouldn't get stolen.

Seriously. That's what Sharpies and nail polish are for-marking expensive electronics permanently. Of course, the thief could erase the mark-but they could also etch the notices out of the case. I don't really see the point.

Our school has absolutely NO security measure. Because we all have to buy graphing calculators for ourselves (except for the first month of school, which the school provides in class only (you return it at the end of the period)) and you flunk the course if you do not, a measure is unnecessary. Everyone has to buy one, though I'd say about 400 of the freshmen's parents were REALLY angry.

Oh man... In high school, we needed TI 86's twice in gr. 10, and we used TI 83's for a bit of matrix math in grade 11. All school units. We were discouraged from using them at all for other purposes (The TI 89 was available at the time...).

The teachers all said, "If you gon't know how to sketch any function by hand, by the time you're out of tenth grade, then you haven't really understood anything."

Except for trig functions. We didn't learn about those till gr. 11.

For tests, those few of us that had our own *scientific* calculators could use them if we wished, but the school also kept a class supply of TI 30x's and Casio solars available for use by the rest of the class.

If they made every single part themselves (which they don't) it would cost them around $1 give or take...but because they purchase most of the parts (I think...) it costs a bit more than that
