Volunteer Screenshot Staff Pulls Through
Posted by Morgan on 11 September 2004, 09:04 GMT

That's right, this summer's volunteer screenshot staff did an unbelievable job. The response I got was truly overwhelming. I actually wish never to send that many emails again in my life. However it was well worth it for ticalc.org. As a group we accomplished many things this summer whilst screenshotting the archives, including:

  • Creating and adding over 21,000 screenshots to the archives
  • Outfitting all ASM / Flash / OS files with screenshots (excluding libs and routines)
  • Surpassing a total of 50,000 screenshots on ticalc.org overall

The goal when we started this summer was to make another dent in the archives, much like we did last year. Never did I even think we would have produced as we have! And just as last year, we had an Aussie leading the pack. A big thanks goes to Tim McMahon for doing many of the BASIC files none of us would have done!

Initially the motivational idea I came up with was to offer community service hours, but not too many people were interested in this. So I asked them what they would like as prizes and they came up with some interesting ideas. In addition to CS hours there were two main prizes, to be given to the top two providers. The winner would have the choice of free hosting space on ticalc.org (as long as the site follows our guidelines) or a gift certificate at a certain value anywhere they wanted online. Second place would get what was left over. In addition, as a motivation to keep myself screenshotting, anyone who submitted more screenshots than I would get the same gift certificate. Finally, anyone who submitted more than 40 programs worth of screenshots would get a free @ss.ticalc.org e-mail forwarding address. These have not been set up yet, but will be soon. Thank you Magnus for implementing this and to NickD and Andy Selle for the idea!

So who exactly helped out with this project...well I am glad you asked:

All in all 12 people will be receiving @ss.ticalc.org e-mail forwarding addresses and two individuals expressed interest in CS hours. Tim will also get the award for beating me :-)

As you can see, we had lots of help! I just want to thank everyone who helped one last time, mostly just for putting up with all my annoying e-mails! On behalf of the ticalc.org staff, Thank You.

Nice work, all!

Hmm, I only got a few in last year...only to have my graphlink break after those few...

I(w/ a buddy) built a homemade one, but, as it turns out, messed up, and got a resistor connected to the wrong pin...still haven't fixed it, and it doesn't work in it's current state...

On a side note, if anybody doesn't know, VTI does run well under linux w/ wine. haven't tried calccapture.

So, got about 95% of the way to being ready for some more screenshotting, and just haven't finished that 5% in time to help...Would have liked too ;)

You can capture screenshots from VTI using xwd, and you can even take animated screenshots with about 10 fps with a short script using xwd. Just set the skin to None first.
