New search engine
Posted by Magnus on 21 March 2004, 12:28 GMT

Our new search engine, announced back when we migrated to the new server, is now finally up. This means you are no longer sent over to Google for all web searches on our site. It also means that you can once again specify which areas of the site you want to search (using Custom search).

For the technically interested, this search engine is based on the tsearch2 package from postgresql, which provides full text indexing with relevance ranking. Since it's included in the database, it integrates very efficiently with the other database parts of our site.

Now that you're done reading this, go rate some files! (1314 votes on 896 programs so far - get to work!)

Google worked well, but it will be nice to be able to specify which areas of the site you want to search.

Well, it doesn't really matter to me...the new search system sounds nice, but actually, I've never used the search much; then again, I use this site mostly for programs and some news - upload some, download some, and so on, so I wouldn't know what people would search...

The new search engine is cool! Also, I have noticed that it is a fair bit faster then the previous search tool (before google). I tried a couple of keywords on the current search engine, and it takes about 5 or so seconds, while to old one would take about a minute or so. Also, I like the new organization of the search results, as it is much easier to just browse down the list.

Good work with the the new search!
A++

That's probably your internet... for me it took about 10 seconds, and I still need to try the new one to compare.

I was connected to a school LAn with a T3 and there were some searches that took a minute plus...some that took seconds...depended on the search.

School LANs are very unpredictable, it depends on how many other people are accessing the internet at the same time you are in school.

And yay, we have a search engine now. Now people can find programs (games) more easily.

Well it is a State University LAN which is a lot more reliable than a high school network. The only time I have had it slow down is when it's not working :-)

LAN unpredictable?

You haven't seen anything. I used to be stuck on a RUN/BASH network For those of you not familer with this type of network it works as follows:

1. Place 3.5 inch floppy into home PC
2. Take out floppy
3. RUN to the nearest server
4. Give disk to server
5. RUN disk back to PC
6. Place disk in PC
7. Get "ERROR RETREIVING DATA" promt from PC
8. BASH disk into pavement with large hammer
9. Go back to step 1

im running on home dsl, and it took less than 5 seconds to search "long long search" (not in quotes in the search) in everything: main, files, comments, news, etc. It brought up 61 results.

And we all know how slow DSL is.... Though, cable is not too great upstream. Infact, it downright sucks. I can on;y upload at about 15kbps. I PAY FOR CABLE FOR CRISSAKES!

kb is kilobits kB is kilobytes....that's the little trick the people use in marketing...a 50kb per second (this is a made up number) wireless router is REALLY **less than 7** kilobytes per second...

Wow :) That's pretty fast... mine's gotten up that fast before. It was about that when I downloaded the JDK 1.4.2 ~45MB file. :)

You mean the J2SDK v1.4.2? I downloaded that just a few months ago as well...for my java class. I'm currently making a graphing calculator application, and have finished function, polar, 3d, parametric, and slope field graphing. It's pretty cool. Hey! maybe I can upload it here! However, I'm not exactly sure how I would, because I can't seem to get them to open in HTML files. Maybe it's that missing IE plugin still...I thought I fixed that, but I guess not.

If you would know how to help, then here's all the info I can give. I compile the programs to a ".class" file and run them (successfully) using "TextPad" (a must-have for all java programmers...it's a great tool) which automatically opens the applet viewer that comes with the java SDK...this creates a temporary html file that I can resave/copy so it doesn't get deleted, but it refuses to open the applet in the html file in IE...only Netscape...I have the most current update of IE (as far as I know) and I have no idea what the problem is, except that I might need a java plug-in, but I got a java plug in with the SDK and it said it was successfully installed...anyone able to help? I'm VERY confused.

There should have been a "Java Plug-in" control panel added to your Windows contol panel when you installed J2SDK. Under the Browser tab, make sure that Microsoft Internet Explorer is checked.

Then, it's always a good idea to reboot, since I think you have to restart the browser to have the changes take effect, and Explorer is always running.

Sadly, if you're using Windows XP, Microsoft has disabled Java support in IE by default (Microsoft's branded version of the Java Virtual Machine isn't even available for download anymore), and you have to manually enable Java for that browser now using Sun's J2SDK or runtime edition.

That sounds cool! Maybe if you just uploaded the .java (for source) and .class (to run) files. Then people could figure it out on their own. :-D

When we used to be on a cable modem (maybe some day we can have one again...) I downloaded a ~700MB ISO file in around 30 minutes. I think that's the fastest I've ever seen a transfer go so far.

my DSL can download at 640kbps... and I mean kilobits. Although it could be faster if we had a better modem.

Okay, going to point this out because no one (not even no_one) seems to know this. I was talking upstream. That is different than downloading. Download is pulling files DOWN off a server. Up loading is putting files UP on a server.

Not to mention, I am sorry that your cable modem can get only 350kbps dl. I can usually get about 600kBps. My overall connection is 3mbps.

Uploading is slower on cable than I would have expected. That was my point.
