It's that time of the year
Posted by Magnus on 3 February 2004, 21:57 GMT

So. Today, exactly one year ago, we posted our latest "we're hiring" notice. Considering that both that round of hiring (which was Joey and Morgan), and the one about a month earlier (Michael) went pretty well, we believe it's definitely time for another round.

This time, the main areas of work will be:

  • Editing and posting reviews
  • Checking links in our Other Sites section
  • Posting surveys
Apart from the general helping out with the site.

So, the requirements then. Since the main work contains lots of editing and writing text, you need to be reasonably fluent in the English language.

As usual in our hiring, the absolutely paramount requirement is time. Most important is a long-term commitment. If you can do it 8 hours / day now, but expect not to be able to keep that up for more than a couple of months, this is not what we want. But expect it to be quite time-consuming.

Finally, if you can increase the staff's demographical diversity, that's a plus - but not a requirement. We encourage people, both male and female, from all countries to apply.

If this sounds interesting, please let us know at newstaff@ticalc.org. Please include the following information:

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • Age
  • Current level of education (finished or unfinished)
  • Where you live (town/state/country)
  • Approximate amount of time you think you can put into this per week
  • Quick summary of relevant experience
  • A quick motivation on why we should pick you
  • If you have MSN or AIM or similar as means for us to contact you

We will accept applications up to and including Feb 15th. From previous experience, please note that this is not a paid job, it's all volunteer.

Is it supposed to say 8 hours a day... that's a lot, maybe a week, I can do that... but I have school, and work... I can do like, 14 hours a week, maybe...

They mean that if you spend eight hours a day for work and later on, drop the amount of time that you put into working for ticalc, then that's not good... working a lot for only a short period of time doesn't help.

Good luck on finding a female. The only I've ever seen on this site (that has posted anything) was Sarah Lacey on the Post-Halloween Update (link). And she was no calc nut, but someone who was obsessed with a calc nut.

Just for the record, we've had females apply in our earlier rounds. So it wouldn't be a first.

I think some universities are getting in trouble for doing stuff like that... they call it something like "discrimination". j/k :)

Actually, the Supreme Court seems to be upholding affirmative action (Reference: the University of Michigan case). I could go on a rant about this, but I don't want to start a flame war, and nickd could do it so much better anyway.

How is that relevant? I seem to remember reading that the server is in Sweden, so we follow Swedish law?

It's completely irrelevant. First, we're in Sweden, so we follow Swedish law. Second, we're a private organization, so we can hire whomever we darn well choose. The only reason I mentioned that was because he said universities are getting in trouble for affirmative action, which is unfortunately the opposite of what is really happening.

Well, I never actually heard the ruling on that case, maybe I should have before posting.

The original wording (that you quote in your message) was not really what Magnus meant, as you can see from his above post. The text has been corrected to reflect ticalc's stance on applications.

Oh, no problem. There was a lot of confusion with that, so I needed to clear it up. Magnus said he was up too late writing the article. :-)

Morgan, you were so diligent with the file archiving up until this week... what happened? [insert some smiley that shows concern]

Hmmm, they must not know aout the time it got up to 200 plus files around the time of the server move :-)

Ok, so you guys might know that I am taking Architecture clases for school, if you don't check the link. Anways, I have on average around 5 hours of homework in that class every other day. The other days I do all my other classes homework. So basically if you haven't guess I am kind of stressing on time. (but who isn't) I don't even have time to send my girlfirend a letter, now that is just sad. I feel really bad abou that.

Anyway....some have been added today and I'll try and keep them coming....I think I have got about 12 hours of sleep in the last 5 days....I can't wait for the new staff member! Then I can concentrate on files.

Yeah, I've been slacking a little, too. However, next week I'll be done with Mock Trial, and on the 23rd, building season will be done for the FIRST Robotics competition, so I'll be back in full force then. I do look forward to the new staffer, though.

I wasn't complaining, I was just worried about you. Your post sounds like the last two years of my life.... I know how you feel, don't stress yourself too much.
