The Return of the Reviews
Posted by Magnus on 24 January 2004, 16:18 GMT

A lot of people have been asking us if we are going to bring reviews back. And we've always responded "yes, but we don't know when". Well, we can now announce that reviews will be brought back to ticalc.org on January 24th, 2004, at approximatly 16:00 GMT.

The main change from before is that we now allow (and ask!) anybody with an account to write a review. Just open up the fileinfo page for the file you want to review, and click the link. All reviews will be checked and possibly edited by one of our staff members before posted to the site.

The reviews from the old system are not currently included. We will look into ways to bring them back without bringing back outdated information over then next couple of weeks.

Get reviewing!

Update (Morgan): A suggested format for a review is now up. Also, just as a reminder reviews@ticalc.org is open to you as well. Here is another example of a well written review.

I think it's a good idea to have them. I'd LOVE to know what people really thought about my game, MtSQuest - True. Which is a good idea. Why not have someone trustworthy & not baised write reviews for featured programs to get things started? <shrugs> it's an idea

How do you judge whether a person is trustworthy and reliable? That would be the hardest part of your plan. Every program is going to have people that like it and those that hate it. It's life. Some reviews are going to be better than others.

i think he means have someone (perhaps on the archive or news staff) include a review of the featured programs as they are put on the site, so that the really good programs have a thoughtful review to start out with.

Yeah, I missed the featured programs part. Having a review to show why it's a featured program would be useful, although that's what the news updates are for... Those go away, though.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Personally, I think it's better for staff members to do reviews because for the most part they are going to look at the programs unbaisedly. Plus who's gonna want some guy who can only make crappy reproductions of other BASIC games to review something you worked long and hard on? I mean, you think I'm really gonna trust Kerm Martin or William Whatever or the Gays Hames person to give a decent review on my Marc the Superkid Quest - True?

First of all, the staff members already have enough work to do, and we dont want to make them do anymore than they want to. And just because Kerm Martian or others only make a ton of BASIC programs doesnt mean they wont give objective reviews.

Divide that in half becasue he always uploads to both the 83 and 83+ instead of having them linked. Which is fine...just sayong that he could conceivably cut the number of programs he has in half, but it's his choice and everyone lese's choice because he is certainly not the only one.

My program "Weed4" was removed, but if you think about it, it is obvious why it was deleted.

The weird thing is that it was there - they *accepted* it - and then it disappeared. Maybe M1cr0$of7 got on their backs! :-D Or not.
And because of _grr_ novell bordermanager, i can't check my Yahoo email :(

Bordermanager sucks...
They've blocked the <i> ENTIRE </i>

Yes, having the ticalc.org people review the games would have an unbiased (sort of) review, but you wouldn't actually know what people playing the game would say. I know for a fact that I don't like games that many other people love, and vice versa. Maybe there should be a ticalc.org person just for reviews... Har har.

That's why the news editors read the reviews before they are posted. That way they can filter out bad reviews.

How about having only people who have programs in the archives be able to review/rate programs?
These people know how much time/effort is needed to write programs, and won't blast them with a 0 just because they couldn't get them to work on their calculator.
Maybe even give more weight to reviews by authors with more highly reviewed programs?

I agree, I think only someone who knows how hard it can be to program should give reviews. But looking at your author status, I saw that you don't have any files in the archives. Wouldn't that prevent you from giving reviews? Just a thought.

Wouldn't doing that lead to a bunch more basic quadratic equation solvers for the TI-83? There would be people submitting programs just to write reviews.

Well, the review system could be coupled with a rating system (that's what I meant by high reviews) -- authors with more highly rated programs would have more weight in rating other programs. Quadratic equation solvers would probably be rated pretty low, giving a low 'clout' factor.

How about 1 review from each reviewer per game author...
