Newsboard Anarchy Trial
Posted by Magnus on 25 October 1999, 14:24 GMT

As any regular visitor to our site knows, there have recently been a lot of controversy about the comments on our newsboard. In accordance with our site policy, we have deleted comments that we have considered to be in violation of the guidelines or completely off topic. This has rewarded us with everything from "thank you"-notices to being called communists. It has also taken up a lot of valuable time from our staff members.

It was clear that something had to be done about the situation. As we saw it, we had three alternatives. We have tried the first one, are right now trying the second one, and would like to avoid the third one if possible.

The first one was to disable the posting permissions for the people who posted most off-topic or abusive articles (which accounts were affected is not relevant here). Naturally, this was done after multiple warnings to the persons in question. This was done a couple of weeks ago, the result of which each person can evaluate for themselves. The trial was in force around Oct 9th to Oct 19th.

The second one is the one we are trying now. For this two week period, we will no longer delete off-topic posts. We will let any kind of discussion go on. We will still delete articles that are clearly out to disrupt the page layout (such as 10 pages of blank lines), or that can be considered illegal or highly inappropriate (such as pornography links or anything like that). Apart from that, anything goes. Please note that there is no change in our policy as to what we will answer in this. We will still not answer off-topic posts. If you want to get in touch with the staff, use e-mail.
This trial will run from the posting of this article for two weeks, and will close on Nov 7th.

The third option, which we would like to avoid but will have to fall back to unless the situation is resolved, is to turn off the commenting on our news articles. News would continue to be posted, but the user commenting would be disabled. Discussions would be referred to the mailinglists where appropriate. While we think that this would remove value from our site, there is a limit to how much we can provide as a free service, and we have been pushing close to that limit.

Once the current trial is over, on Nov 7th, a survey will be posted, in which we will ask you, our visitors, which way you think we should handle the situation. The survey will be open for one week. This survey will be purely suggestional - we will make the decision based on the result of that survey and based on what we think at that time ourselves. The survey is not decision-binding. However, we can guarantee that the result of the survey (as well as the result of the trial in whole) will have great influence on the decision.

We have been accused (by certain parties, as far as we have noticed it is not a general concern, but we would still like to address it here) of not listening to the voice of our community. We feel that this has not been the case before, and certainly will not be in this case. But as usual, we ask you to send your constructive comments to our staff directly at news@ticalc.org (assuming it is about our news system). We do not constantly monitor our comment board for site suggestions. We do, however, keep all mail we receive to the appropriate mailing addresses, and we take into consideration every idea that is proposed to us.

We regret that the situation has gone as far as it has. Any other suggestions on how to deal with it are very welcome - drop us a mail anytime.

Is ticalc going to allow spam posting like on normal newsgroups? That would really suck.

Well, most spammers would not go to the trouble to register for a ticalc.org account, and so I don't see it as too much of a problem... Even with the old system, where you didn't need an account, I don't think anyone even tried to spam...

All right a few words,What is wrong with you!!!!Humans strive to be controled that is why anarchism stoped as a government system.
A side note,If we can do what we want why are we still on topic?can any someone say Y?I know Y we want everything to stay the way it is because of this word it is control.

I find it kind of funny that you said "anarchism stopped"... when did anarchism start? =)

As said many times before, "anarchy" was a bad word for ticalc.org to use. The reason people are staying on-topic is that most (not all) people will follow the "unwritten" rules anyway... it usually only makes sense to stay on-topic. I find it extremely hilarious that ticalc.org rates free speech as a *worser alternative* than censorship... I never knew censorship was better than free speech. But I guess there's a first time for everything.

While it may not be a complete match in definition, I'd say anarchism is *fairly* close to what we had before we had "any system at all".
But it may be a bit too far off, we really weren't very civilized back then :-)

On the Internet, all you have to live by is what you type.

If you make grammar and spelling errors, your only means of identification has been marred.

It doesn't take that much more time to type correctly. So do it.

So far the only people i have seen complaining about censorship are those that take this seriously. The "Eugenes" haven't shown up looking for attention. I'm guessing Bryan has so much againsh ticalc.org for removing posts because his were removed? Am i right?
Anyways we have to remember that the stupid off topic threads are by people looking for attention, thats all they want.
As for the news items that Nick has been posting lately seem fine with me. The only person i see getting upset about them is Bryan. He is the first one to find some flaw with them or that they are off topic. I think i know what is going through your head, i always try to get the last word in an argument. Or when someone tells me i'm wrong i prove that i am right and nag them until they just think i am crazy. Sometimes they see that you are right but other times you make situtations worse by not being able to stop your self. Another question for you Bryan, why do you post so much? I think you have had the most post about each article for the last week. Every other comment is related to yours. I also think the ticalc.org staff should ignore Bryan's post whenever he tries to critize you.
One last peice of advice for Bryan. Move on with your life, the fact that you are here so much shows that you need to forgot about what you use to do with ticalc.org. Do you crave the acceptance they gave you until you were "fired" or are you just annoying the message boards for some kind of sick fun?

Take note that i have used proper capitalization, but my spelling skills are horrible

1 question for you Bryan. How many BASIC files have been found inside an asm directiry?
I know of a very recent one, so what if the archiver made 1 mistake, he is not making any money for this.
I bet when you worked here you _never_ made a mistake :)

He never made a mistake when he worked here, which should explain why Phil had to delete at least 5 files with the F word in their filename right after Bryan left.

I probably made mistakes, but nothing that major. Think about it, how hard is it to decide whether a program is BASIC or Assembly? If you simply RAN the program on the calculator, you would know instantly. It's obvious they aren't testing every program. I tested every program. Enough said. :)

Doesn't do much good if you access the internet through your colleges computer network and they have a firewall set up that blocks access to ICQ. Beleave me, many people on campus who are very good with computer systems have tried to get arround it without success.

Go chatroom.

I really wish ticalc.org would set up a chatroom.

Your's probably uses a SOCK 4 OR SOCK 5 firewall. My college (Northwest Missouri State University -- first college to have an electric campus) doesn't. No one on campus can use ICQ or IRC. The college has even contacted the providers of ICQ to try to work something out (with no response). It sucks.

It is solemnly morose when it comes to immature people like you that think you are so cool when you are given a little liberty. You probably don't even comprehend why this is all going on. And I might inform you that it isn't to let everyone "get things off their chest." You'd think that people would show a little more maturity to such an issue, but I guess I can't expect people to meet my standards! Well, maybe you should look over what you said...then you might see how much of an idiot you appear to be as you are the only one who put on such a puerile performance! However, you probably act like that all the time...so, your lucidity won't perceive it!

Um, Mike, maybe you didn't read the note at the top... They specifically said you can't post stuff like this or it would be deleted... There was absolutley NO point in posting something like that, not to mention that it doesn't make you sit any better with programmers...

There has been a lot of controversy regarding the whole 83+ programming thing, and I'm going to have to agree with the former opinion of the programmers and say that "If you want the games, write them yourself"

Hrmm ... interesting ... okay ... NO.

Beasty, I think that you have single-handedly (you were jacking off with the other hand) brought down the good name of the TI-83 Plus. Being a TI83+ owner also, and a mature, thoughtful one at that, I think that you should just stop now with the senseless posts. You are a lazy (wants people to port games for him), whiny (come on, port it now), thoughtless (doesn't think about the developer's wishes and such), fucked-up (do I have to explain? ^^) shell of a boy. For the sake of programmers, and everybody's sanity, you might as well stop with this shit.
