SDK's for 83+, 89, 92+ Announced By TI
Posted by Nick on 11 September 1999, 04:31 GMT

TI-Files recently reported that TI is coming out with an SDK to let people develop programs for the 83 Plus, 89, and 92 Plus. What's significant about this is that normal ASM coders and such can make Flash ROM programs for these calculators. All programs must be digitally "signed" by TI first before they can run properly. Another thing of note is that there is an 8K max limit on the programs you can create. More info to come, but for now you can visit TI's FAQ on the SDK. It looks very promising!

Update (Nathan): The news article contained a few errors. Only Flash applications must be signed by TI; they can either be "Freeware/Shareware," which means you can distribute them either free or as shareware (your choice) or "Authenticated," which means they require a certificate to be run on a calculator. They are currently distributed by TI. Please read the FAQ for more information before posting.

Am I mistaken, or does the FAQ say that SDK development will begin AFTER the release of ver. 2.00? We might be waiting a while here...

First of all, why are you so anxious to get the new ROM version? You already have it, right? Or are you finally admitting that your entire group is merely for creating hoaxes?

But to answer your question, there was a post on one of TI's message boards that said that the new ROM was supposed to be out on the 10th of September, but it should be out by next weekend. The guy who posted it also had some screenshots (if they're fakes, they're much better fakes than what you posted) of the new ROM to give some credibility to the claim -- I think he might work for TI.

If you want to judge by yourself, there is this famous page :

Do you really think those screenshots are fakes ? I don't ("I want to believe !").

Oliver Miclo does not work for TI. He is a technical writer for a French journal or paper of some kind.

I never posted any AMS 2.00 ROM Images, I only had 1.00 and 1.05 ROM Images. Ihave no removed them, TI sent me a threating email. Anyways I don't believe the screenshots on that guys page are fakes, or maybe I just want to believe! Also you need to chill, I was just wonderin' when TI was going to "officialy" release it.

Am I the only person that saw the "screenshot" of ROM 2.00 on ccsw's site? You claimed you had the ROM, and you didn't. It was a fake, just like WinOS and PlainJump.

I never claimed that Miclo's screenshots were fake -- I believe they are real. I just said that if they are fakes, he did a better job than you did.

No, I saw the "screenshot" of ROM 2.00 on [ccsw]'s website also. I downloaded it and the flash installer. The flash installer worked, but the ROM didn't. Virtual TI didn't even acknowledge it as a TI-89 ROM. It brought up a TI-92+ with nothing on the screen of the calc. Very disapointing. I don't know if WinOS is fake either, but he did a bad job of faking the "screenshot".

Hmmm. Just give me the documentation and TI-GCC, and I'll be happy. I don't expect to use either of their compilers at all. Unless, of course, the professional edition is < about $35.

And that stupid shareware feature ... bad, bad, bad ...

These SDK's sound very good, but I don't like the idea of shareware. I think that programs should be free like they always have. The average teen doesn't have the money to spend $150 on a TI89 and get shareware programs. Programs won't be developed for qulity or education, but out of greed. I think that these new advances are a step forward, but they will lead to a bad TI underground where people post cracked shareware programs that won't be completely reliable, but that will be the only choice for non rich teens, just like with shareware programs for windows. There will be many Ti warez sites that will gett squashed, but new ones will come. I just don't think its a good idea.

I also don't like how TI plans to charge for a Professional Edition of its SDKs. I understand why tthey might need to, however, since only the serious programmers will dish out the money and there will be a higher percentage of quality programs.

One thing I do appreciate is the new 68K operating systems. I think the current ones have a few bugs and their interfaces are messy.

I agree that shareware is a bad idea. What about setting up a boycott of TI-shareware products -- nothing but freeware (plus those professionally developed commercial programs)? Anyone else willing to do it?

I also think the pro version is a good idea, but I would've liked a somewhat less restrictive free version. Oh well, good ol' TI-GCC ...

I think a boycott is a great idea. But I would take it even further, boycott all commercial calculator software. Does $50 for software on a $150 platform sound a little strange to anyone else? Not even Windoze costs that much!
<MELODRAMATIC RANT>
Free software (who am I kidding, games) has sold countless graphing calcs for TI. Now TI plans to exploit and extort from its biggest supporters. TI owes a lot to all the Z80 ASM, 68K ASM, and TI-BASIC programmers. Without them, how many people now reading this would be writing RPL programs instead? TI also owes a ton to EVERY TI-calc site on the net. They should be GIVING AWAY commercially developed programs to their supporters, not trying to steal from the pockets of innocent calculator nerds in the interests of corporate greed. Anyone know where I can get a 49G?

Doesn't sound strange to me. I once had a copy of Windows NT Server on one of my computers that cost more than the computer itself.

Ya I would say the same thing maybe like one of those sign up things where ppl sign up , and you need so many names or something like that... anyway I think that if TI will have the shareware there should be a boycott, and I would say that if TI thinks that they can make or charge for something that is good I would say that a few programers should get to gether and make something better to what TI will make and have it FREE then no one will want to buy the TI verstion... thats only an idea hehe

It seems to me that TI is just trying to compete with HP, and since sharewares are successfull on HP, they are supporting them on TI.

But I really think that the 8 ko limitation with the free SDK, will result in the fact that we'll all be continuing to program with a68k and TI-GCC, along with DoorsOS.
Nothing will change... good try TI !

yes, i agree
sdk would have been great is there was not this stupid limitation of 8k
YEah, i mean that 8ko is so small u cant make any good prog on 8ko exept if u seperate it in 20 little packets which is unlogical
SO i also think that peoples are going to continue programming using doorsos or plusshell or tigcc

Maybe with some petition it would be possible to ask ti to get from 8 ko to 24 ko which is ok

I'm hoping to add the ability to run ASM programs larger than 8K to Flash Explorer (hopefully to up to 32K). Don't quote me on this yet, I'm still not sure how well the system would work...

On the lines of ti-gcc...

Anyone know of a good reference for Ti-GCC? The included example of the hello world program is good, but it shows only one example. DrawStr. Any reference on these would be very helpful!

(either that or I wait for the TI-SDK)

Well, it's ANSI compliant (except floating point support doesn't work yet), so the syntax will be the same as any ANSI C compiler. And since it's a port of GNU C, the docs on GNU C will probably help you. And all of the 89 specific stuff is included in the readme in the distribution of tigcc.

I'm down with the boycott, someone should tell the major TI sites to mention it on their main pages .

The wording was not too clear, but it looks like the shareware option is just that... an "option". It looks like you can still create programs that don't have to be signed by TI, etc. These programs should be able to run on anyone's calc. As always, I reserve the right to be wrong.

"At the copyright owner's discretion, a signed freeware/shareware application may either be sold as shareware, or given away for free. Signed freeware/share applications may be distributed in any manner the copyright owner chooses." -- TI SDK FAQ

Note the term "freeware". Also note that it says that the software may be "given away for free." The option to give the software away for free is at the copyright owner's discression. I don't know where everybody got the idea that it had to be shareware.
