TI Offers Translucent Cases on Newer Models
Posted by Nick on 24 August 1999, 02:19 GMT

When I thought life couldn't get any better, TI came along and topped it. Now they offer a new line of translucent iMac-style cases for the TI-73, 83, 83+, 86 and 89 calculator models. Only $4 for one or $16 for all six, plus shipping of course.

This is the most incredibly stupid thing that I think that TI has ever done. Next, they’ll be selling transparent calculators! I better be quiet, I don’t want to give them any ideas...
Now, what might actually be nice would be if they sold normal replacement covers. The one on my 83 is a little bit worn out.

They do - but you have to call 1-800-TI-Cares and ask about replacement cases. They used to charge $5 for an opaque case (and a calc to calc link, for that matter. I lose a LOT of things =)

I bought an opaque TI-86 replacement cover two weeks ago (and was a bit upset when I learned I now have a choice in color--although I'd not have chosen a translucent case, I think).

It was $1.75 or something like that, and just $2.71 after shipping.

Personally, I think that if someone wants a translucent cover, good for him. He can get it and I hope he enjoys it. I would definately get a translucent calculator (I like being able to see inside). I already bought translucent disks. :)

With the translucent disks, my brother can't take them and say, "Oh, those are mine," because they are translucent and neon-colored. :) A Good Thing, if you ask me. I think it's nice that TI gives people the option.

Yeah, but Neon disk are a lot more expensive. I could get 50 disk for $15 and then there is a rebate that sometimes comes making 50 disks free. I want a CDRW drive. Those make disks sooooo small.

My mom just went back to college last week, she found out she needed several floppy disks for the class. We went to Wal-Mart, she saw the plain black ones, then saw the "pretty neon ones!" Although the dollar more, my mom wanted the colorful neon ones because of the simply fact that people are made to see colors! Black and white simply doesn't appeal nearly as much as color. Shoot, I even wanted a neon floppy to add to my collection of plain...black...white...floppies.

However, I would never get a neon calculator case because I don't want to hear it from people at school coming up in two weeks! PLUS, it doesn't really appeal to me...

Ehh, my computer tools are orange/black handled with a black case.

My computer disks can be colorful. Orange for Windows EBD and diag tools, dark green for school, light green for Linux, clear for misc (like running files down the street or whatever), and blue for programming stuff.

<shrug> It's just fun to color-code my personal stuff. I don't use disks very often, so it wasn't a very big deal to spend $7 on 10 disks (not after classes and textbooks, anyhow!).

BTW, TI _used_ to charge $5 for a case replacement - this is a BARGAIN (for the love of god, I better not lose my case if they're not selling the old oblique ones =)

I'm going to get all of them and change them to match my clothes, so my calc doesn't clash when it's in my custom made ti-holster.

You have a TI-GC holster? I've been wanting one for years! I need the pocket space. I guess I should make that run to the surplus store.

This is undoubtedly the STUPIDIST thing I have EVER seen. Why the hell would anyone want a color cover on their calculator? <begin sarcasm> Hey, maybe it runs better when you cover it with an ugly cover! Or, maybe math will be more FUN with pretty colors! This way I get to see the keys when I have the cover on. Whoopy!<end sarcasm> The calculators look especially bad because only the cover is a distateful translucent color. The least TI could do was make the calculator consitantly nausiating instead of providing us with a teasing glimpse of what a calculator is suppose to look like. The most they could do would be to commit Hari-Kari out of shame for this disgustging entry into the Color Gameboy/iMac mentality...

Why did the staff remove the article about a TI employee posting old rom versions of the 89 and 92+?

Actually, the TI employee contacted us again and told us he had to pull them. If all goes well, they should be back online somewhere in the future. Kind of amiguous, I know, but it's the best we can do right now.

I have a TI-92 with a Plus Module, and I would love to have a cool translucent case for it, as I'm sure many other people would, but TI doesn't offer them. Why not launch a letter-writing campaign to TI asking for cool cases for other calc models? Does anyone know what address to write to?

Even if you don't like the colors, the clear case is nice, so that if you are running a program that takes a while, you can close up your calculator, and look at the screen while you are carrying it or after your instructor told you to close the case.
