"Project A" Proposed
Posted by Nick on 14 August 1999, 22:53 GMT

Matt Hernandez informed us of a project starting up for any and all TI coders called Project A. It is intended to bring as many TI programmers together as possible to create what could possibly be one of the best TI programs ever. What the program will be about is to be determined soon. If interested, we strongly suggest you go and apply.

wouldn't it be pretty tough to organize a project that big and coordinate all the programmers? with so many people working on it, it would be hard to get much done

Look on the website, it explains some of this.

Is this program going to be for multiple calculators?
Is it going to be Basic or Assembly?

I must ask the same question. it sounds cool, but what is it in? asm or basic?

and which calculators is it going to be for?

Also, i vote for making it a really involved RPG for the ti-86.

1) It'll be in BASIC. Sorry for being unclear about that.
2) Look on the page, it escapes me right now, but since it's BASIC it'll be relatively easy to do ports.
3) Vote on the page, it has a survey form :)

The Project A page says that it will be ported to all of the commercial TI Graphing Calculators. That would mean Ti-73, Ti-82, Ti-83, Ti-83+, Ti-85, Ti-86, Ti-89, Ti-92, and Ti-92+. But I am not sure of this. Am I right?

Why basic the program would be a lot better it it was in assembly

Why would it be better in ASM? Strange thing to say...

I think that is because ASM tends to be faster. Even if the game is easier to port in Basic, it may not run very fast on slower calcs, especially considering the fact that the program is most likely going to involve complicated graphics and engines.

In most cases, I would agree with you. However, this is going to be an RPG (check project page), for which it would make much more sense to use basic, considering portability and flexibility instead of graphics and speed.

While it is a great idea in theory, having so many coders and so little focus could pose problems. Plus, due to the restrictiveness of BASIC, plus the fact that if we will be able to 'correct' each other's code at any time, meaning that anybody could wipe out somebody's meticulously written code, there are other problems to work out.
Perhaps if you get in touch with everybody expressing interest, and assess what talents you have to work with, you might be decide to work in ASM after all. Maybe you could break into teams or something. And the coding online thing is if-y at best.... it might work better posted daily as the results get in, with each group/person working on different routines.
Good luck.

Why limit yourselves? How about a project with modularized pieces of both?

OKAY! All your answers have been put into a FAQ on the Project A site. Go <a href="http://basm.org/basic">here</a> to get the answers to your questions!

This would be a good time to bring up the fact that our comments don't support HTML for the main reason that someone could do a link to an image that's a 1.2 gay male pr0n pic or something equally disgusting. That's bad.

I agree that putting gay guys on this would be bad; but it wouldn't be that hard to just take out the background and img tags.
that way you could still use links and such.

sounds tough to develpe the program 1 line at a time on the web
maybe it should be broken into small sections
for example 1 team working on 1 the opening and user interface, another on other parts and so on...
