New TI-Graph Link software for Macintosh released
Posted on 30 December 1998, 02:32 GMT

After many months of waiting, it is finally here. Texas Instruments has released the TI-Graph Link 2 v2.1 Beta 1 software for the Macintosh with TI-73, TI-86, TI-89, TI-92, and TI-92 Plus support.

I mean it. End the Mac/PC "debates" or we will wipe the comments.

If you'd like to argue about the iMac et al., I'm sure there are several relevant Usenet groups on the topic. Take it up there. Thanks.

Chris

Actually Slashdot has the same problem. They allow anonymous posts, so that wouldn't help.

Ignoring the ignorant PC owners posting here, the Mac Graphlink software runs fantastic. All my PC buddies are drooling at the ease of use and how stable it is compared to their buggy pc software. (Also, TI may be releasing a USB graphlink since their is a large demand from both mac and pc users.)

Note to Macusers: Let them complain about macs! They are just bitter because they are stuck with slow machines that run an unstable OS. ;)

Who needs a USB Graphlink cable. The serial port version works fine, or is the iMac too advanced to have something as simple as a standard serial port?

USB GraphLink

USB offers several advantages over a "standard" serial port, besides the fact that USB was created with the intention of replacing the serial port. The first and most obvious advantage is the speed. The second is the ability to hot-swap. The third is that you can have other hardware attached to the same port as your GL, with no ill side-effects.

To answer your second question, yes, the iMac is too advanced to be slowed down by an old serial port. Not too far in the distant future, PCs will no longer have a serial port on them. Hopefully, PCs will also drop the parallel port and the ISA bus altogether. This is a movement forward, and staying with the serial port is like chosing to ride in a Taxi when someone offers you a Ferrari.

But a standard serial port is still much faster than what a TI-89 can deliver.

Plus, USB supports up to 127 devices being connected to the computer simultaneously!

Even though I don't have a mac and I would never buy one even of someone pointed a gun to my head I was able to have a look at the mac version of this software (using Fusion). It looks like the people at TI spent more time on it than on the PC version :-(

Well, you have to realize that the mac developers had a longer time to work on the software. We had to wait 3 months till we got our graphlink software. Plus the ease of use in our version simply fits the operating system. The macos is great for dragging and dropping files everywhere. You can do the same in windows, but its not as easy. For instance, if I want to send a file to my ti-89, all I have to do is drag a file off my desktop and drop it on a window in the application. With program startup time included, it takes me less than a minute to send files to my calc. I love macs.

I don't. I would never want to wait so long to send a file to my calc.

I would figure that the mac version is better cause most of the schools that use TI calcs also use macs. Most schools aslo have multiple formats of calcs, so this makes it easier for the teachers to transfer to diferent calcs w/o having to switch between progs.

The main reason is that it's so much more funny for programmers to work for a mac product on a mac than a PC product on a PC!

New Graphlink SW

Say... is anyone out there using the new software with a 92 Plus? I am unable to open a saved program, save a new program, get a screen capture, etc... All give errors like it cannot open this type of file, or view this type of data, or the clipping area is too large. G3-266, 8.5.1. Any constructive thoughts are appriciated.

Notice: I said constructive thoughts. I personally use win95, win98, Mac, and Linux. I see no need for quibbiling. All of the above have their own unique shortcomings. Live with it. Have a nice day.

you should use a small utility like File Typer or ResEdit to change the FILE/CREATOR of the files you downloaded this should make Ti graphlink accept them. good luck!

Windows: it's just work
Macintosh : it just works!!!
