Connect Your TI-83 to the Internet
Posted on 20 September 1998, 01:47 GMT

[Telnet 83 Screenshot]
Justin Karneges has released Telnet 83 v0.96 Beta for the TI-83. This program will allow you to connect to the Internet from your TI-83 and allow you to do IRC, e-mail, or browse the World Wide Web. You need a TI-Graph Link cable, an external 9600 modem, and a cellular phone or wall jack. Telnet 83 goes a step futher than FTerm, RTerm, and ZTerm by featuring an 80x25 scrolling "virtual" screen. This allows you to run programs for Linux such as Pine. For more information check out the Telnet 83 Home Page.

SHUT THE HELL UP BOUT OTHER CALCULATORS
It was made for the 83 and i hope it is NEVER made for other calcs
i am glad this was made for the 83 it just goes to show that some people just like the 83 better

The 83 is an obsolete peace of junk, it is out proformed by every other calculator (except the 80, 81, and 82). Even the much older 85 is more powerfull and programs can make up for the softwear not built in. Your just mad because you spent so much on such on an inferior calculator.

Does anyone think that maybe the guy only has an 83 to work with? Besides, if it doesnt get ported to the 86, peeps with Clem's new shell will be able to use it nonetheless. And for the folk with an 85, I am 95% sure that it will get ported to it.

I have a TI-83, a TI-86, and a TI-92. I like my TI-83 best because the TI-92 is just too big to carry around and the menu system on the TI-86 is a pain to use. For the most part I can get along just fine with my TI-83.

I only have a 83 but I have had a chance to try my sister's 85 and I have messed with the 92 for a few hours...my phyolosiphy is...the higher the number (excluding the TI-86 and 89)...the worse the calc...i just wish the ti 83 came with more memory...then it would kick ass

Geez! What an atitude! In educational circles, yes, the 83 is better than the 85 because of the advanced statistic functions and the tables. _but_ have you ever used an 86? They took the 85, and added the 83 features (well, except financial) that were popular. So basically, the 83 stat functions aren't any better than the 86 (in fact, you can tell they used the same code as a base for both!)

I use a 92 and an 85, and the 83 and 86 just don't work as well in my opinion. The 85's conversion options and menu-driven interaction (Solver) work for most things, and the -92 just utterly rules whenever I need calc or algebra stuff. Not to mention the ASM shelling. One wonders, if this connection really does perfom as stated, if we can expect a usgard or fargo 2 port....*EG* The -92 would be a good terminal for such things.

86 finance
Leon Pierre

You can get an asm "applet" from TI or ticalc that does some finance stuff. I tried it once, but I dont know anything about finance. There is also another "applet" that does something else (something that the 83 does but the 86 doesnt do as/is?) but I forget what it was for. I also rather have F keys any day over the 82/83 menu system.

I agree with you, the 83 just has a weird feeling with it ..... although, more horse power and quicker TI Basic drawing code wold be nice :)

man you need help. First of all there is nothing wrong with the other calculators so take a deep breath and talk to a shrink about facing your fears. I for one also have an 83 but since the memory is so small and other reasons I got an 86 and would like to have this program. Anyway

Ok, after I saw this program go up, I got curious and looked at the term programs for the 85. I've noticed that for all term programs, no matter what calc they are for, require the official TI GraphLink. Why is that? Is it possible to make a terminal program that uses one of the homemade links? Is there one out there already? Thanks,

I'm not exactly sure about the technicals... But I think it'd be possible to create a 'com-port server' on THe computer, and have it access the Link port to send/recieve data... to emulate modem access. But this workaround defeats the portibablity of the project. I'm sure some complex hardware could be created as a go-between between a homemade link and a modem, but I woulden't be the one to do it.

With regards to the cables, I believe that the
original Graph Link cable is required, because
unlike the home-made cables, which rely largely
upon custom coding within the computer itself to interpret the signals sent by the TI, the Graph Link performs an onboard TTL<-->RS-232 conversion, which allows direct communications with a serial device (e.g. a modem), without further signal processing. You could make one yourself, but it'd be much easier to just buy one :-)
