File Information Pages
Posted on 5 September 1998, 14:39 GMT

File Information pages have been added for every file in our File Archives. To access these pages, just click on the icon next to each file. This will bring up a page with the following infomation:

  • Title
  • Filename
  • Archive
  • Author name & e-mail
  • Size
  • Time of last update
  • Source code (yes/no)
  • Documention (yes/no)
  • Description
  • Screenshots (if any)
  • Archive contents

Currently, only most of the TI-92 screenshots are done. We will be working to get the rest completed over the next few weeks. We expect to have approximately 6000 screenshots. Also, look for more information to be displayed on these pages in the future.

Ticalc guys- Great idea!
But Ken, your idea is the BEST! I know that I am constantly downloading files, only to find out that in the readme file it has all the formulas or whatever that all the other programs do. I REALLY hope the Ticalc people take this idea into SERIOUS consideration.

The main problem is that people name their documention files different names. We would have to implement a standard naming scheme for all the files. And going through all the files and renaming the documention files is not an option.

You should implament a standard naming scheme for all files, and at least show the readme file for all new files uploaded.

You could have something on the submit part to click yes if you have a readme.txt or a readme.doc

i still love the idea

I bet that 99% of the documentation files are named as follows: If the zip file is xyz.zip, then the documentation file will probably be readme.txt, readme.doc, xyz.txt, or xyz.doc

If you wanted to implement a standard for naming, you should give ppl those choices... most ppl wouldn't have to change anything

You guys could implement something in the submit page so the author could tell the system what the documentation file name is. :)

That would work wouldn't it?

That is a great idea! I like the screen shot idea too. I like having a list of all the files in the archive, that is very useful.

kimo

you can get screenshots? i tried getting them with my graphlink cable and the graphlink software, but they won't let me get ASM screenshots. how are you going about that? i was told that the programmer adds a routine that allows that so that they can have one for their webpage and then takes it out for the final release. if this is so, and you're adding to the programs to allow screenshots, don't suppose i could borrow them for my webpage? =)

To take screenshots for the ti-86, use SNAP86.

if anybody reads this please email me!!

I have a ti-86 and i want to put pictures on my website. I was told to use snap86 but that doesnt seem to work on all of the assembly programs. is it suppose too? what about an emulator.......is there a good one out there?

Anyways....I love the idea of putting all of the information of the program on a page. I have always liked your site and you always seem to come up with ways to make it better.

!!!CONGRADULATIONS!!!

You have my vote for the best ti calculator site.

You can also use an emulator to get screenshots.

Re: File Information Pages
Evil Sam

Seeing this announcement, I had to check it out. I see a few problems:
1)The size listed is the size of the zip not the size of the actual program(who cares about a stupid zip size?, what you really want to know is how much space this program will take on your memory deficient calc)
2)The information is listed, but it doesn't say what the information is for.
Example:
ZTetris v1.3

ztetris.zip

TI-82 Assembly Games (CrASH)

Sam Heald (evil_sam@hotmail.com)

16,359 Bytes

Wed Sep 2 00:36:57 1998 GMT

Yes

Yes

ZTetris v1.3

Shouldn't it say what all this information means? I noticed this with the survey results as well. The results were listed but not the questions. Maybe its because I am using an older Netscape browser(v3.0).

This is very strange. What OS are you using?

Windows 95, the A version I think. My netscape version is v2.02.

Upgrade. Also make sure your system has at least 256 colors.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: File Information Pages
Evil Sam

Yeah, I know. The Netscape v2.02 is the problem. I tried the Netscape v3.0 on my father's computer and the problem doesn't occur. Unfortunately, I can't get versions 3.0 or greater of Netscape to work on my computer :(

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: File Information Pages

I would suggest then disabling the use page's colors option. This will make it go to your default color. Granted, the colors won't be as nice, but you should be able to see all the text.

Below the info it shows how much memory the unzipped files are.

Re: File Information Pages
Evil Sam

Are program authors going to allowed to write their own program descriptions? I just wrote crap that had nothing to do with game in the little description box when I submitted games. So for example now the Picross 82 description says "the 85 version will be updated when Andreas gets back from vacation", obviously out of date and having nothing to do with the actual game.
I have one other gripe. The "author" listed is simply the guy who submitted the program. For example, I didn't write Orzunoid 82, I am just the maintainer of it. All authors should be listed. I don't think I deserve sole credit for any of the games I have submitted.

     5 September 1998, 20:44 GMT

Re: Re: File Information Pages
Evil Sam

If I want to change the description, do I have to completely re-submit the file even if there is no actual update to the program itself?
Or do I simply need to email Bryan with the new message?

Re: Re: Re: File Information Pages
Bryan Rabeler
(Web Page)

I am going to be writing long descriptions for most of the files. But if you would like to write them for your files, just e-mail them to me and I'll stick them in.

As for the authors part, we are working on a system that will list all the authors and porters for each program.
