Picross v0.9 Beta Released
Posted on 9 August 1998, 10:32 GMT

[Picross Screenshot]
Andreas Ess of Icarus Productions just released Picross v0.9 Beta for Usgard 1.5. This is a puzzle game originally made for the Nintendo Gameboy. The goal is to draw an image according to numbers. This may sound simple, but as the images get harder and time gets shorter, this isn't easy at all. This version contains 45 levels, mostly 8x8 but some are 16x16. Future versions should include more levels and level section, and maybe even a save game feature.

Hey Andreas, when can we expect to see Usgard 1.6? :)

Err... Well :) I hope to find some time during my vacation, but I'm not quite sure whether I'll find that WINLIB bug. But I *might* include some other things. Right now, I'm pretty busy, so no time for Usgard (yet?)

What about internal support for the Expander II.

Rather not:
a) as I stated above, I'm pretty busy
b) I got no access to the Expander II
c) Usgard would probably get too big - seperate version necessary??

Andreas I was wondering what are Icarus Production's upcoming releases, I been to your page and it shows what has been made, but It doesn't tell what games you are working on...

We might include such a section... But:
a) At first, I want to make the whole page CGI-based (BTW - TICALC.ORG did a great job on all that CGI stuff!!!)
b) Concerning Nintendo projects, we're contractually prohibited from telling about our projects

Re: B) What does "contracutally" supposed to mean? Does that mean Icarus is a licensed developer for games on the gameboy? Speaking of which, how do you get to play SQRXZ v0.8 on a real gameboy(not just an emu)?

Yes, Icarus Productions is a licensed GB developer. To get a game like Sqrxz on a catridge, you need a EEPROM catridge and an EEPROM burner. But that's pretty expensive ($100?)

Does this mean Nintendo(or some other company) may someday publish games developed by Icarus Productions?

Two comments:

1. In Nintendo's picross, you don't need to be on a line to see the blocks in that row. The numbers are already there.

2. Is there anyway to see the numbers in the vertical column more clearly? Maybe leave a one pixel space between each dot?

Actually, I tried displaying all numbers on the screen first, but this is nearly impossible, because a number may only be 3x3 (8x8 levels) or 1x1 (16x16) pixels wide. This is why I removed this feature.
I also don't have enough place to leave a dot in vertical direction, I think...

Hmm, I'm unable to play it on my TI-86 with AShell, I'm afraid. >:( I wish my calc wasn't stolen. I'll have to get another TI-85 at this rate. ;) Too bad, because it looks like a cool game....

Future versions of Rascall will support this, as I heard from the author, he had to re-write the _vputmap routine to get it to work, so it should run on the newest version of Rascall when it hits the web. [Whenever that is...]
