you can add more memory, but it's a very hard thing to do.
Mel Tsai made a memory expander for the TI series, called
the SF expander. Check out his homepage.. im sure there
is a link somewhere from ticalc.org or ti-files. However, it
needs it's own driver software to run, and that needs to be
done in assembler. there is a version of the driver software out,
but that's for ZShell (85), and as such it wont run under TI-83. It
should be possible with the 83 (not the 82) since that can do ASM.
