Think of it this way:
74**165 (8 inputs, 2 outputs) --------> 74**164 (2 inputs, 8 outputs)
A timer/counter on each end and you could get away with one wire.  Then,
you've just multiplexed 8 wires onto 1, sending the line states of each 8
wires one at a time.
