Quick Updates
Posted by Nick B. on 30 July 2002, 21:02 GMT

With the last weeks of summer vacation ticking away, back-to-school season is once again upon us. However, the last couple of weeks of July were not completely inactive in terms of new releases, so let's have a look:

  • Joe Flint released The King of Fighters 2000 for the TI-83 and TI-83 Plus. This advanced fighting game has been in development for over two years and includes fourteen playable characters.
  • Greg Dietsche has relased KerNO v2.0. Essentially a kernel (of sorts) that provides features for nostub programs, including ways to break out of ASM programs that are not responsive, removes ASM size limits, and enable ASM programs to return values in expressions. New things in this version include improved keyboard responsiveness, bug fixes, and Voyage 200 support (in the 92+ version). Available for the TI-89 and TI-92 Plus.
  • Patrick Davidson has released a slight update to the Phoenix Platinum Edition for the TI-89 and TI-92 Plus (which should work on the Voyage 200 as well).
  • Also, calc.org and its hosted sites are now back up, so be sure give them a look.

Especially to the guy(s) that wrote KerNo and the TI-FAT Lib,

I have found a major bug involving the two utilities mentioned above, if you try to use the TI-FAT Lib (I tried it with Corridor92) with KerNO installed, the end result will be no playing Corridor, and about 20K of your RAM will mysteriously disappear. The memory wont come back until you do a complete memory erase. I think someone should look into this!!

I will look into the problem as soon as I have some free time. Hopefully, that will be soon :) I'm very sorry for having crashed your calc :( (assuming KerNO is to blame...)

alright, i'm going to need more details. I could not reproduce the problem you described.
I tried it on a ti-92 plus hw2 (with hw2patch) with the latest versions of corridor92, and KerNO.

I did, however, discover a bug several days ago that might be affecting you. make sure that you have plenty of free ram before running corridor... corridor uses ttstart, so having 1.7k free is a minimum, and i would be that corridor requires much more than that when you are playing the game.

The bug I discovered is simply that KerNO, and _EVERY_ kernel in existance (even Univeral OS, and PreOS) which gets rid of Invalid Program References (IPR's) will cause a crash when the ams does not have enough memory to copy an archived program from the FLASH to ram for execution. This is (of course) because the ams throws an Invalid Program Reference Error when it can not allocate the needed ram for the twin symbol.

"...when the ams does not have enough memory to copy an archived program from the FLASH to ram for execution."

Maybe this sounds really stupid, but how about checking if there is enough RAM available before telling the AMS to execute the program?

its no where near that simple. the kernel has to be able to figure out _what_ caused that error, and there exists at least two other situations in which that error can happen. Furthermore, the kernel, or KerNO does not have any advance knowledge that the AMS is trying to run an ASM program. The kernel simply sits and wait for the error to happen, then it uses an ugly hack to bypass said error.

Essentially, its like a school yard monitor... a kid gets in a fight, but the monitor only sees the end results, and give the kid a bandage. It fixes the remedies most symptoms, but the child may require more treatment.

I just watched "Triumph of the Nerds" from 1995. It had lots of evil people like Steve Jobs & Bill Gates. But Why wasn't Joe Wingberwhatshisface or Michael Vincent on there? Or no_one_2000_ or Chickendude or me? w@@h!

Check out my TI-83/Plus site! See (Web Page) link or go to 83heaven.8m.com!! It's still in the building stages, but very cool for TI-83/Plus users. Does anyone want to be on the staff?

What you can do is do an account search with a first name like Megan, Rachel, or Kim and then see what comes up...duh!
