eBook Directories Created for TI-89 and TI-92+
Posted by Eric on 17 February 2001, 21:47 GMT

Okay, we've been putting this off for an exorbitantly long time, so finally I went ahead and created some much-needed eBook directories for the TI-89 and TI-92+. Now you can enjoy those eBooks in all their splendor...in their own directory! Ummm...yeah. Anyway, moving all those files over (141 to be exact) took quite a bit of time, so it's possible that I might have missed a couple. If so, let me know, thanks :).

While we're at it, this also needs to be mentioned: if you're planning to submit new eBooks to our archives, please be sure that the material you're submitting isn't copyrighted by others. For example, we cannot accept such things as movie scripts to recent movies, recent novels, etc. Anything over 70 years old is fine, since the copyright has ended on them. If you're still unsure, Project Gutenberg is an excellent resource.

tinews.net sure has an interesting poll today. Now, which option should I choose?

* Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (111) in modules/mysql.sp0rk on line 20

* Warning: MySQL: A link to the server could not be established in modules/mysql.sp0rk on line 20

or

* Warning: Supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in modules/mysql.sp0rk on line 28

?

i'm a member of tinews.net too and don't know that much about the problem either. all i know is that the MySQL database crashed so nothing works because tinews.net basically relies on MySQL databases.

Gee, like it's really so hard to write a wrapper for queries in PHP so that it has error checking and aborts the page if there's a problem connecting to the database...

You missed 3 ebooks in the TI-89 misc. directory: jourerth.zip, "Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth"; timemach.zip, "Time Machine", and gtravels.zip, "Jonathon Swift's Gulliver's Travels." This new ebooks directory is great, it reduces clutter.

OFFTOPIC: BTW, if someone wonders what the new TI-Chess v3.20 brings: It features now the "perfect" grays for HW2 (some method as used in UniversalOS,- as promised)

No, anything over 70 years old is NOT necessarily fine. The Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Act set the copyright for the work of an identifiable author to expire 70 years after said author's death.

So for works where the author died more than 70 years ago -- say, Shakespeare -- 70 years is fine. But for works published 70 years ago where the author lived a few years longer, the copyright has yet to expire.

FYI, the real reason for this is Disney. The copyright on Mickey Mouse and friends was expiring once again, so Disney lobbied Congress to extend the expiration deadline again. The most recent challenge to that extension was just shot down in court on Friday.

Not that copyright is gonna stop anybody -- I ebook'ed the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy to read in school (and no, I don't own it). A good book, although somehow it seemed to lack resolution at the end. I should probably read the rest of the series.

I have had the entire series on my Visor for a while. Since they are on TUCOWS, I figured they were in the public domain, but the homepage it lists seems to indicate otherwise. I don't know anything about this eBooks thing (my Visor is much smaller than my 89), but the ascii is there so you could run it through the converter. Speaking of converters, has anyone thought of writing a converter to/from Palm Pilot format?

(Scott: all five books are good, and won't make sense until you've read through at least the third one)

The third one ("Life, universe and everything") is a bit boring. All other parts are great. I can for a full hour quote citates from the book that I remember.

Does anyone know where to get copyrighted recent eBooks for the TIs? I found a site a while ago but lost it. Thanks.
