MicroSheep Releases Sonic MisAdventures
Posted by Nick on 16 November 1999, 23:31 GMT

Sonic MisAdventuresPatrick Pelissier, maintainer of MicroSheep, released Sonic MisAdventures for the 89, 92, and 92 Plus today (download it from the web site). Uh, it's basically a clone of Sonic the Hedgehog ;-) There's not much else to say about it. It has astounding graphics and wonderfully smooth animation, and you should really check it out as soon as possible.

Also, the Microsheep site is in French, so be warned. :)

Update: The program was originally submitted to our archives against the wishes of the author; it has been removed from our archives, but you may download it from MicroSheep.

This looks sweet! But doesn't Mircosheep only want the game to themselfs and their webpage?

Well, Babelfish seems to be down at the moment (for me at least), but from what I get out of the web page, I see something about "webmasters not ... link to Microsheep". So I'd guess, it probably says not to post it on any other site.

I speak French. The author says, "Webmasters, do not place this program on your pages but place a link to microsheep."

Now WHY would they do this? Generally authors want people to download the game. By NOT letting it appear in the archives, when the news item disappears, so will downloads of the game.

They could put a link to the program on their page. Note they said they didn't want anybody to have the file on their page, but that they were able to link to the file on the author's page. At least that's what I gathered...

Right... but my point is after a day or two, when the news item goes away due to other news, no one'll even remember they exist.

I admit the graphics are wonderful. However, the game crashes the calculator. This seems to be a habit among games with great graphics, except for Super Mario Quest and Solar Striker. For example, Bomber Boy 89 and Street Fighter 89.

If flashy graphics are such a problem, just program simple graphics, as Patrick Davidson did with Phoenix. That game turned out great.

the person i replied to was right ... there are a couple t-89 games wchich are simply amazing, but they crash all the time, I think programmers should try to impress people with good ideas not good graphics (because they take up memory and crash the calc). Someone should make a bulletin board of ideas for games that programers could look at. The poeple who know assembely dont have ideas (alot of the time) and the people who have ideas cant program.

This already exists -- it's called "Program Ideas" under Programming.

Speaking of which, the program ideas section is pretty unorganized....

I think programmers should sometimes consider working in teams. Each person works on a different aspect of the program. For example, one person writes the program, the other person designs the graphics. That's what I think is wrong with the current programs: one person does both. That's why we have programs like Phoenix, with great programming but Ok graphics; and programs like Sonic Misadventures, with great graphics and bad programming. I think if people worked together on programs, the overall product would be better.

If I understand what you say, sma is the worst program of the world. Well, it is interesting... Moreover, I don't think the graphics are as good as you said. They are just correct, for a grayscale game.

How can you say that sma is badly programmed ? Haven't you noticed the double scrolling, a technology that has never been implemented in a calculator game ? Since this system is very new, we can easily admit the fact hat it still contains some bugs. Sma makes me consider Patrick Pelissier as one of the best TI programmers.
Yes, the game sometimes crashes, and isn't compatible with everything, but it is obvious that it isn't completed : monsters are missing. We can predict great improvements for this game !

I know that my arguments may be very contestable, but being a programmer myself, I'm juging especially the technical aspect.

That's entirely false -- the "parralax scrolling" (the proper name) is found in Clem's JnR - technically not release - and some other game I played (I can't seem to remember which one. . . grr). It's not too hard to do, justy a pair of buffers scrolling at different rates.

Um...I suspect that by "double scrolling" he meant two-dimensional scrolling, not parallax scrolling.

And as for the bugs in the program--gee, do you think that might be why MicroSheep wants it to stay on their site for a few weeks, rather than mirrored in archives? It's probably an alpha release! This has happened before, if I remember correctly.

ummmm. . . whoops? =) I can't think of that as something to brag about -- look at the 89 version of SMQ, it's there. And tile-based programs, like BigDyna. The second dimension is actually easier than the original, although to do both at once would probably get pretty confusing. . .
