Ultima V Released
Posted by Michael on 27 July 2008, 15:56 GMT

In news that we should have reported a while ago, David Randall has released an astoundingly complicated and well-designed game for the 68k calculators: Ultima V. Ultima V is based upon the original video game, and features 400 hours of game play, two world maps, 32 multilevel towns, and enough other characters, spells, and commands to completely immerse the user in the game.

In other news, we are now trying to recover from the pending files backlog. It should be cleared within a week.

Woohoo! Incredible. Ultima has always been a favorite, and this looks like a perfect port to the the 89. Hope they port it to other calculators too, though...

Thanks for the feature article Michael!

And thank you for the kind words Ben.

Ultima V was written for all of the 68K calcs. Unfortunately, there are no plans on porting it to the Z80 calcs.

Looks cool. I don't have an 89, but I can admire the screenshots. :)

How was this game developed? Was all the data ripped from the original game, and a game engine designed around the ripped data?

You have the right idea!

Originally, I planned to use the data files directly from the DOS version of Ultima V. However, the data files were formatted in such a way that accessing the data via C data structures was very cumbersome and resulted in a larger than expected game engine. So, I reformatted and/or rewrote every data file to be more C friendly -- a large task in of itself.

I hope you like it!

Ultima V is a classic turn-based RPG unlike Zelda. It has a great storyline.

Take some notes as you play. It would be nearly impossible to remember all of the information extracted from the NPCs.

On a side note, this might be the first time I've seen an animated screenshot on ticalc.org's homepage.

Yeah... That seems large for the Ticalc front page.

Michael, if the screenshot eats up too much bandwidth, I can supply a still image or smaller animated GIF.

Actually, I didn't even notice the size until reading this far...and then it became clear that the page was still loading. It takes about 4 minutes per MB, although stopping it is no big deal.

As for Ultima, it looks interesting--I'll have to check it out when the chance presents itself!

Cool... Now if I can ever get around to checking it out after finishing my other projects, which may actually happen within my lifetime if I get lucky.

The file size appears pretty good for a large game like this, about the same as a medium-sized flash app.

Oh yeah, and about the 400 hours of game play, all I can say is “Whoa.” :-)

I have the original HW1 version of the TI-89 -- on which only 384KB of Flash is accessible for non-Apps. My goal was to have Ultima V fit on my TI-89 with room to spare for other programs. As you can see, Ultima V for TI requires about 270KB of Flash (about 600KB when uncompressed).

The DOS version of Ultima V totalled 1.2MB spanning 4 floppy disks. Ultima V for TI calcs contains the full story line.
