TI-89/92+ ROM v1.05 Problems and Corrections
Posted by Nick on 31 July 1999, 22:05 GMT

David Hart has posted a great deal of information on his site regarding the new TI-89 and 92+ ROMs. These ROM versions result in incompatibility with a great deal of games. David has also created a patching utility for 89 and 92+ assembly programs so they will work properly with the ROM. Only use this with programs that don't work under the new ROM. Patched programs will NOT work under the old ROM version. If you have any difficulties with finding out what programs work, you can view a list here. Thanks to David for all his efforts!

Still, it does help to correct a lot of problems... and it reduces the amount of nerds with sleepless nights because they wouldn't have been able to play any games on their calculator :)

There's a new version; download from the same location. This version should work for more files than the previous version.

Ever since I heard of all the problems with ROM v 1.05, I've decided not to upgrade. It's as if TI wanted to destroy all of our game playing.
Does anyone know what ROM v 1.05 actually does different than 1.0?

What I heard is that this new rom only brings some bugs corrections. Just like all the differents rom versions on the TI92 1. And like with the TI92 1, the assembly shells will have to be adapted in order to work with the news versions.

TI has no problem with the assembly games or programs. I've emailed them about their thoughts as to violations of their intellectual property rights. They say that your warranty is void if you use them, but you are in no legal danger.

The reason the games don't work anymore is because the place in the ROM where the DoorsOS/PlusShell kernel expects certain things to be (for its own RAM calls and such) are now in different locations.

They don't support these shells, and since they don't support them, they don't have to recognize them. This means that none of the calculator's supported functionality is changed. Since you've already voided your warranty by using these shells, they don't have to worry about non-functioning games or other ASM programs.

Linking Problems Solved....

One thing I did notice in the new ROM is that I can now get my Graph Link to send files to my 89 succesfully every time. Other persons that I have spoken with also have notice the change in the stability of pc to calc transfers. For me, this is a major reason to upgrade the ROM. I dont really care for the games, since I have an emulator and Prosit works fine in the new ROM. So if you wish to improve link transfers with your GL, go ahead and upgrade, its worth it.

I think this is great! I've had problems with using my graphlink on my 89 ever since I received one in October of last year. I'm glad that TI got this fixed... :)

Yes, that happened to me as well. All the sudden it would just stop receiving from the computer. It seems as though ROM 1.05 fixes this. I'd much rather be able to transfer useful stuff as opposed to not being able to play games (how terrible).

i upgraded my 89 rom to 1.05, but it has so many problems, especially together with doorsos beta 2, so i downgraded my rom back to 1.00 and put back the old doorsos. the 1.05 rom doesn't seem to improve much and it's a pain to have to patch programs all the time. when 2.00 comes out i'll definitely upgrade, but 1.05's not worth it

maybe they did do it to get rid of games. Take a look at what they say.

This is maintenance upgrade for the TI-89. There is no functionality change. There is no equirement to install this version. If you download this upgrade, ensure that you have backed up any important calculator files you want to keep using TI-Graph Link for TI-89 prior to installing the upgrade.

I think the incompatibilities could be a marketing ploy. After all, the Official TI89/92+ Application SDK thingy is coming out sometime in the future (I think the TI83+ beta is already out). If they can effectively instill the fear of incompatibility in the hearts of all TI89/92+ Asm programmers, It will just make their utility more popular. But then again, maybe it was just accidental.

Ya, if you dont need to download it because it make no changes, why did they post it, or even make the new version....?

Read my reply in one of the above comments. Also, type:
rotate("")
on your 89/92+ with the old version, and then on the new one........

I know they fixed it. I still can't get DoorsOS or Plusshell to work. Maybe I should write my own. Does anyone know how to do file-IO?

Checksum errors, checksum errors...
meingts

I have a couple of problems.

1. The patcher refused to patch userlib.89z for DoorsOS b2. (patch failed) Interestingly, bigdyna.89z ran just fine with the unpatched userlib.89z. (Perhaps I patched it, but missed the dialog box saying I did?)

2. For each of the files I was able to patch (i.e. util.89z, solitare.89z, tetris.89z, phoenix.89z), I got a checksum error when trying to send the file to my calculator. I use the TI-Graph Link BlackLink Beta v0.10 software and the gray link on COM1.

Any ideas on what's wrong? I use DoorsOS beta 2.

thats because doors already fixed most of the problems with everything included in their zip so it would work with the new rom

Big Dyna doesn't need patching - it will run quite happily on the new ROM without patched libraries or having to be patched itself (see my site for a list of which programs are like this).

The checksum error problem is more serious. This is because the patcher is altering the checksum. I am now trying to correct this problem, and a perfect patch should be out later today.

When a file has an altered checksum, you can fix it with the program "sum92.exe", findable in the Fargo distribution.

The corrected version of the patcher is now available. It will now output the correct checksum to patched files.
