TI-Files acquires a domain name
Posted on 12 October 1998, 01:51 GMT

TI-Files became only the second active TI calculator fan website to acquire a domain name on Friday, 9 October 1998. The new site, http://www.ti-files.org, runs on Dave Jaklitsch's computer under Windows 98. Dimension TI also plans to get a domain name soon.

Great the TI-Files and TICALC.ORG are easy to access. Hopefully the two can be huge and a great success.

Right. I hope everyone is thinking this way about all the TI sites that exist. Each site has features that make them all unique. As viewers, we may like one site the best and some of us visit all of them! I'm the type that goes wherever.

If someone asks for help on something and you refer them to a certain TI site, they should not respond with, "well, I dont like them" or whatever. If a site has something you need/want, then by all means go there. All these sites are here to help. There shouldn't be a war or anything.

Also, if a file shows up on say Dimention TI and then ticalc.org goes there and takes the file to put it on their own site (assuming it's a program) then there should be no problem with that. All these programs are free anyway. It's not like it matters where you got them. What makes each of the TI sites special is the extra features beyond the archives. What would bother ME is if I saw another TI site that had a game archive layout containing "Action", "Role-playing", and then suddenly a bizzare name like "Snake-type games" (I always laugh when I see that) which would be an obvious cut-and-paste from TI-Files.

This should be friendly competition.
Well, that's my thoughts.

eeeEEEEWWWW, Windows98?!? It's great that they have a domain name and all, but c'mon! No Unix? Even NT would be better than *gasp* Windows98....

Does it really matter if people decide to go to TI-Files? I like ticalc.org better anyway. What does it matter if people decide to go to a different site? Does the TI-Calc.org staff care? I wouldn't.

I also have a question. I know it is way off the subject, but is there an IR link for the TI-86 calc? Radio link? I think it would be fun to be able to chat from 2 different classes. Please answer this (send me an E-Mail)

Thanx

It isn't smart, nor is it stupid. It's news. Of all the little fan sites for TI graphing calculators, one has had a domain name. Now there are two. It's news!

ticalc.org reports community news, and I'm proud of them for being non-selective. The rivalry between the two sites is mostly between the users.

Actually tons of people know about it. Just about all (if not all) of the ti calc related channels on Irc have had something related to that as their title. And ti-files announced it (well duh why wouldn't they?). Maybe you should think and consider everything before you call someone stupid.

Well, I think the Ti-Files has IRC, and 'ticalc.org' has the Mailing List... Its not about the archives, or the recent contrevesy of the PUDs, but about communication and how information is provided to the TI Community, the ease of use to access information, and the availablilty of the site, hint hint... Well, thats corrected now with the new server or whatever. I beleive this is just where they keep eachother in check, IRC and the mailing lists... Now, this is not the next path to take: Ti-Files developing lists, or 'ticalc.org' getting their own IRC channel, just leave it how it is... =P

Actually, in the old days when I thought IRC was fun, #ti-files was mainly used by ti-philes and #ti (formerly #ticalc and #calc-ti before that) was considered a ticalc.org channel. Maybe that has changed now...

I'd have to agree with Adamman. I used to regularly visit #calc-ti on EFNET IRC almost three years ago. Back then, #calc-ti was the only IRC channel for TI communication. Surely it was in existance and most oftenly used before #ti-files came about.

he didnt call anyone stupid
the way i see it he meant that people who dont go to tifiles wouldnt know they had moved unless they put it up in the news of the site they do go to, ticalc.org

Uh...yeah...you're assuming that all (or most) TI calculator users come on IRC...which obviously isn't the case. I'd say that the vast majority of users never go on IRC, and therefore wouldn't have known about the domain name.

Wow..I must say that my view of you guys has changed. I must apologize for all the flaming I've done on here...thanks very much for giving out the info on our new domain name. With a *FORMER* member giving out our password to someone who deleted our old server right before we switched, we were not able to relay the change to many of our visitors. Perhaps some day, all 3 of the major TI games and programs sites will get along in peace and harmony.....

speaking from experience

i dont think dimension ti should be considered a big site, they never update their programs with the new versions.. even when you send them the new version attatched to an email saying what it is and where you would like them to put it.

Dimension-TI recently underwent some staff changes, you probably sent the program to someone who is no longer on the staff. Send me the program (adam@findcure.com) and I'll upload it ASAP.

On the contrary, anyone who has the talent and the responsibility to maintain a site as vast as dim-ti should have the prestige to consider them a "big" site.

Well, Speaking for Dim-ti, I am currently working with them, and I will be a member very soon. I think they update their programs more often than you would think. And people, these are graphing calculators, why do we always have to argue whenever something about another site comes up? these are CALCULATORS! its not the end of the world. Please stop all of this.

hrm

Advice for Dimension-TI, you guys should check each program you post on your site for a version number and display that number next to each program (some are really old versions and you have not displayed the version number), so the person downloading it knows what they are downloading, and so you can tell if your version is newer or older than one found on another site.

First of all, if you checked the site since our overhaul on September 5, you'd notice that most of those programs have been updated to their current version. Secondly, do you have any idea how much work that is? If you have that kind of time, then feel free to email me the names of the programs that are not up to date :) But we did a lot of that this summer, so most, if not all, of the programs are up to date.
